Need HELP with computer sound
Hi, I just recently built my own computer, and here is the problem that I am having-I am getting absolutely no sound except for 2 beeps from the internal speaker when I turn the computer on. Here's what is happening on the computer:
Occaisonally, when a sound is made on the computer, it comes through as a beep on the internal speaker. My speakers are connected and they work, and I have uninstalled/reinstalled my drivers numerous times, and downloaded the new drivers for both my motherboard (which I am trying to play the audio through, not a sound card) and my video card. In my device manager, here are the devices listed under "Sound, video, and game controllers" - ATI WDM Rage Audio ATI WDM Rage Video ATI WDM Specialized MVD Codec ATI WDM Specialized PCD Codec ATI WDM TV Audio Crossbar ATI WDM TV Tuner Audio Codecs Legacy Audio Drivers Legacy Video Capture Devices Media Control Devices Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver* SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio Standard Game Port Video Codecs. All have a speaker symbol beside them, except the Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver has a yellow exclamation point beside it. When I double click on it, the error says "A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)" There is not even a speaker symbol on my toolbar to adjust the volume, and I don't know what to do. I checked the bios to make sure the internal sound was on for the mother board, and I also tried using a separate sound card, but the same thing happened. Here is what I am using: ASUS A7V8X-X Motherboadr ATI All-In-Wonder 9000 Pro video card AMD Athlon 2500+ Processor Windows XP SP1 operating system I am very frustrated and I don't know where to turn. Thanks for your help. |

Did you install the sound drivers off the motherboard CD?

Yes, I installed the "SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio" drivers as well as the "Via 4 in 1" drivers from the motherboard cd

Do you have any front panel connectors hooked up to the mobo sound connector? Specifically the mic and headphone connectors on the case. If so, try disconnecting them from the mobo and see if you get sound.

Ok, so I uninstalled everything once again, and tried to install the sound drivers one more time. When the prompt came up on the screen to install a sound driver, it asked to find the "Avance AC'97 Audio for VIA(R) Audio Controller". I put in my motherboard cd, and a selection of 6 different drivers came up for me to choose, which are:
Avance AC'97 Audio for VIA(R) Audio Controller Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA(R) Audio Controller SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio v. 5.12.1.3663 for win 98 SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio v. 5.12.1.3663 for xp SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio v. 5.12.1.3538 for 98 SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio v. 5.12.1.3538 for xp So I see if I can install any of the sounMax drivers for xp, but when I do and error comes up saying "class installer denied request." However, the last 4 are the only digitally signed ones, and the Avance and Realtek drivers are not digitally signed. So I install the Avance driver, and after that and now everytime I turn on the computer, windows is searching for an "unknown" driver for a piece of hardware, which I believe is the sound. So then I checked in the sound properties in control panel the Avance 97 properties, and aparently it was not turned on. So I then turned it on, but now it says "driver has been enabled but not been started" and still nothing is selected for the sound component on the computer...hence still no sound. Sheesh! |

Also, I removed the front panel audio connectors, and tried both with and without jumpers on the board.

So, any suggestions?
Or should I just throw my computer out the window, which is what I'm about to do. |
