Question about setting up RAID
Hi Guys
A quick question for you regarding RAID and SATA. I am building a new system using a DFI Lanparty Ultra II B motherboard which supports RAID on the SATA drives, Can i install the OS (win XP pro) on a SATA hard drive and still set the drives up in RAID or will I need a separate drive for the OS The RAID setup/configuration utility manual looks like it has to be set up under windows and have the partitions created with windows running, the utility is called "SATARaid" by Silicon Image, any information on this would be most appreciated. Thnaks guys |

When you build the system, after post, you should have the option to enter the raid setup portion of the bios. This is when you will first configure the raid array. Both drives must be connected in order to set up the raid array. With two drives, however, you will only be able to run raid 0 or raid 1. To run raid 0+1, you will need a total of four drives.
After the initial setup, you will be ready to install windows on the raid array. When setup starts, you will be given the option to "press F6 to install the raid controller drivers". After loading the setup files, windows will ask you to insert the floppy disk that contains your raid controller driver. This is assuming you are using xp or win2k. tireman

By the way, have you already purchased the samsung drives or are you planning on getting them. My suggestion would be to go with western digital, seagate, or maxtor drives. Alot of people have had bad luck with the samsungs.

Thanks, Hopefully I'll get to finish it tomorrow evening as i've still got to buy a new case, graphics card and some other bits.
Will I need to partition the drives or will XP pro installation do this for me? |

The XP setup will allow you to set your first partition - if you want multiple partitions, you do that in Disk Management after XP is installed.
