it will power on but it won't get very far. I believe the cpu is the first thing looked for in POST, after the BIOS checks itself.

Why do you want to do this, without a CPU, RAM, or Video card installed the board will just give post errors, so you can't tell anything. Which means that the only thing you will find out is that the case speaker will work.

well I installed all my bits and bobs including hard drives CD-ROM drives Ram cpu cooler plugged everything in and wanted to know if this all works as my processor and graphics card arent due to arrive till tommorrrow unfortunately some one had played with my PSU switch and put it on 115v and it fizzled so I cant test this anyhow - what I would like to know is could this hurt the mobo?

You are doing everything backwards - you want to mount the CPU and ram on the board, stick the video card in, and try for a quick POST with the board on the table before you even think of putting the board into the case.

You won't even get a beep with no CPU.

Yes, it varies between them, like some beep for every USB device. My mobo gave out no beeps when I didn't have the processors power plugged in, which I think counts as no CPU since it can't operate.

The A7N8X will even tell you in a nice, robotic voice that you have "No CPU"

Until T.R.O.N. intelligence is integrated into mobo's, i'm not sure we'll have that feature...
