Slow performance with Win98SE but great performance with WinXP Home.

I just built:

2.8C
GA-8IK1100
1gb OCZ PC4000
ASUS TI4200 @310/675
Antec Sonata 380w PS
Maxtor 40gb HD
Dual boot 98SE/XP Home

Anyway the 3D Mark score in XP is 12666 but in 98 it’s only 8400. What’s up with that? When I play Battlefield it lags badly and sometimes locks up.

TIA

Win98 tends to have issues with CPU's over 2.1 GHz, and more than 512MB of RAM.

I'd recommend getting rid of 98 and staying with XP.

XP will be able to take full advantage of the newer hardware as it supports HyperThreading as well as the 1gig of ram. I would move up to XP and leave 98 on the older boxes that don't have the speed for XP.

No performance benefit to be gained by going Pro.

Win98 is only designed to take advantage of 384 Megs of RAM. Any more than that causes problems.

Hi guys,
I agree with the general opinion here.

Keep using XP home (or pro!). I use XP pro which is the business orientated version of XP on two PC's here. I wouldn't even go back to W2K now.

I won't even begin to give out about Windows 98.....but given a choice between 98 and XP Home I'd choose XP......and I wouldn't need a millisecond to make that decision

IMO XP in general is a very good OS.....if it works then use it.
