Read files on DVD in DOS

How can I read files on a DVD after booting into DOS, just like a CD or floppy? It would seem that a "real mode DOS driver" is needed. Or some other file or DOS program that can be run after booting to DOS. In order for the files on the DVD to be readable, is there some special way to write the files onto the DVD, 'close' the DVD and/or? (I believe there is no difference, regarding this question, whether it is a DVD +/-R or DVD +/- RW?)

In my machine, a DVD disk in the DVD drive does not show any files after I boot a W98 floppy. A DOS dir to the DVD appears to show about 3 files, regarding udf (I don't recall the exact names, but none of these files are seen when in Windows 2K). A CD in the DVD drive does show whatever files are on it, since the boot floppy installs the CD driver which assigns a drive letter to each of my optical drives (a DVD burner and a CD burner, both on the same IDE cable). When in W2K, I had placed only one test file onto the DVD, no dir structure. I (think) I closed it in Roxio 6 Basic to be fully readable (I recall there were 2 options, both were checked). It would seem a DVD (not the mscdex CD driver) DOS real mode driver is what is needed?

I see - the DVD is written in the UDF format, not ISO9660 or Joliet. There is no DOS UDF driver that I know of, sorry if I mislead you.

OK, so no UDF DOS driver. But what if I were to burn files via the ISO or Joliet format. Is there a DOS driver for either? If so, I am not sure how to set the correct format in Roxio 6 Basic. Pardon my newbyness on optical storage. I think much earlier versions were clear as to what format was about to happen. I have not found explicit info in my current version. Anyway, thank you for your assistance so far!

Mscdex should be enough for ISO, not too sure about Joliet, that requires long file name support, I guess it would depend on the DOS version.

Success! ISO9660 is the way to burn a DVD so that the files can be seen in DOS, copied elsewhere. Thank you for the frist reply, which I was just not aware of what it fully meant. UDF (Drag-to-Disc as Roxio now calls it) is fine for having a huge floppy of the DVD, but only when in Windows.
