CD RW problem

The trj\Revop E malware trojan got into my puter and made some changes to the registry. Spybot was able to fix those changes but a problem developed with my CD burner as a result of the changes and that did not get fixed.

I have a 48x12x48x CD burner using Nero software. The software works fine until it gets to the menu for choosing what you want to write to the CD. The right half of the menu loads showing my files but before the left hand part of the menu loads the A drive comes on and starts running. It will not stop unless I press ctrl/alt/delete. Then of course Nero shuts down as well.

I tried a complete uninstal and reinstal of the Nero software but that had no effect.

Does anyone have any idea what I have to do to fix this? I do know my way around the puter pretty well thanks to PCMech, however I am still not great with all the tech jargon. If it is explained in fairly straight forward terms I have always been able to make repairs. If anyone can help it sure would be appreciated.

I am running win98se on am ASUS Duron K7AMA mb with 128 mg RAM.

I also have InCD that came with my Nero CD. The InCD software still works fine.

Try right clicking your taskbar and going into properties of the start menu, and clearing the contents of your Documents menu. Those are just shortcuts anyway, and if one of them is pointing to the A drive, this can cause similar issues.

Thanks for the reply glc. I cleared the docs menu as suggested but the A drive still continues to start running part way through the loading of the Nero menu.

Unhappy Sounds like . . .

nero is searching for drives and has somehow been told that "a:" is a drive to look for, or, nero thinks the floppy drive is a cd drive. I vote for the first. There should be a setting or option somewhere that you can tell it what drives to look for. The floppy should report an error and ask you to retry or cancel. How long before it "times out", or will it?
Try running nero with a floppy in the drive just to see what happens.
Other possible fixes are: ????
See if there is an update to your software and update it.
or
uninstall Nero from safe mode first, then reinstall.

Hi Cat,

Thanks for the info. I am fairly certain you are correct. Quite a few of my registry keys and pathways had been changed by the trojan. Spybot fixed some of the changes but obviously not all.

Other things were not working 100% as well but it was not a major problem. However I remembered last night about windows scanreg/fix. I ran the scanreg/fix from dos and all of the small problems have corrected themselves and my puter is running fast again. However the problem with the burner was still there.

I followed your advice and tried placing a floppy in the A drive. The Nero software still tried to access the floppy, but after reading it Nero then finished loading and I was able to burn. It is a bit inconvienient to have to put a floppy in each time I want to burn but it is better than the burner not working at all.

If anyone has any idea how I go about stopping Nero from searching for the floppy instead of the CD I sure would appreciate it.

which version of nero do you have?

*added by edit *

Try loading this nero info tool and see what it tells you. If it is the same utility that comes with nero6 ultra it should atleast give you something to go on.
