Question defrag not working

Hello,
I have two Maxtor 80Gb drives in a Raid 1 setup. When I try to run defrag I get an error message "defrag aborted due to inconsistencies with the filesystem". It then tells me to run Chkdsk which I do and it locks up on the 4th test at about 45%. I have tested both drives individually using Maxtor diagnostics and they pass. I am running windows XP and have the drives setup with the NTFS file system structure. Any ideas?

Before you do anything else, back up your data files onto another drive or removable media, anything you do from here on could possibly make the drives inaccessible and break the mirror permanently.

Remove the drives from the RAID controller and put them one at a time on a standard controller, and see if each one will boot by itself - if each does, try running chkdsk again standalone. I am not basing this recommendation on any hard data, but it's something that I think is logical to try.
