I just bought system mechanics for my PC. Have just relied on scan disk and defrag to clean it up before. But this utility found a lot of junk and obselete files, so I got rid of them (everything seems to be working ha ha ). My question is on the startup. What is it necessary to have running? I have alot of things that are running when I startup the pc. I know this uses memory doesn't it. Hope someone can help here.
Thanks
Tim

Well if your system has enough ram and you want it running in the background I don't think it would hurt anything. If you don't have much ram, I don't think it's necessary...I have 384mb's of ram and only have RC5 and Zonealarm in the background, I personally hate it when the system tray gets cluttered up with so much junk as it takes longer to load at startup and use more memory. HTH and lemme know if you have more q's.

thanks Floppy I am not sure what I can get rid of. I know there is a couple of things that have to run like explorer and systry.. anything else that has to run? I have something like "Rnnap and Cmmon32" running. I am sure it's probably something I have loaded on here but not sure what it is.I have gotten rid of a dozen or so things. Just not sure what all I need. I have only 96 megs ram

I think those 2 things are probably fine..but you know with the way ram prices are, I'd invest in another stick of 64mb or 128mb's of ram....Ram is real cheap nowadays..you probably have a stick of 64mb for $20 or less. It will give you better performance and your swap file will be used less as well. HTH

I have been looking at ram prices. Is the generic a good memory? I know tiger direct has 128 meg for 50$. lol, I paid 40 for 32 megs 3 yrs ago.. The name brand seems to be a little more pricy. I want to get at least 128 megs more. I am getting ready to put one together. still getting pieces.

A good place to start is here.
Explains about system resources, startup, and what you can take out, etc.
