ddr speeds and dual channel and fsb

hi i dont really get what the front side bus is and what it does. also, if i have a 2.8Eghz 800mhz fsb cpu, and i have a pc2700 memory stick, could this memory be overclocked automatically causing resets? also, if i were to buy another of the same stick and ran it in dual channel, it should run at 5.4gb/s right? would this stop my random resets?
also, if i oc to 3.36 ghz, what would my fsb be? would my memory work with it? thanks. the only reason i would rather have the memory run in dual instead of buying faster ram is because it is cheaper. i should mention that the memory i currently have is cheap memory from a brand ive never heard of.

Random restarts can be caused by a poor quality or overworked power supply, cheap RAM, a faulty video card, a faulty motherboard, etc...it's hard to pin down sometimes. You have to approach it systematically to find out what is causing the reboots.

If you're using PC2700 RAM, forget about trying to overclock your 2.8E to 3.36GHz...ain't gonna happen. The RAM won't overclock that high, especially if it's cheap stuff. You'd be pushing RAM meant to run at 166MHz all the way to 240MHz, just not gonna happen...system might not even start up at all.

A 2.8GHz P4 processor is: 200MHz FSB X 14 multiplier ratio = 2.8GHz. To get to 3.36, it's 240MHz FSB X 14 multiplier ratio.

the pc2700 is already oc'd to run in sync with the 200FSB, unless it's on a 3:2 or 5:4 divider. You could *maybe* run it up to that FSB, but it would HAVE to be on a divider, or it probably wouldn't boot.

The ram is not running in sync with the front side bus, 1:1 they would be the same speed. Your ram is on a 3:2 divider, you could oc higher and put it on a 5:4, but you do lose *some* of the performance gained, also it could cause instability. That chip will scream with some good RAM

Hmmm...that divider thing again...don't quite understand that yet. Guess that's what happens when most of your motherboards are based on the Intel i440BX chipset and you're using Slot 1 CPUs...you end up being kinda out of touch with the latest motherboard tweaks and tricks.

lol thanks anyways. i think the problem might have actually been my video card(lets hope so!) im using my new video card and im gonna try and test it out so hopefully it will work.
