IBM Netvista
A friend of mine brought his IBM netvista to me to fix as it had just come out of warranty (isn't it always the way?).
He had suffered a whole bunch of power outages recently and the comp wasn't starting up. I took it home, took it apart, ran it through its paces and determined the HD was deader than a doornail. So I tell my friend what's up, buy a replacement drive (Maxtor 40GB, same as original). But then I find out that there's no restore CD! IBM's apparently partitioning the drive with the restore stuff on the second partition. Is there something I could do, or should I just download a cracked version of XP? After all, he's paid for it, it should be legal. Either way, it's pretty stupid not to include a restore CD if you ask me. Dogwelder |

Contact IBM and request a set of restore disks. Worse case, you might have to pay a little. Plus you're assured of getting all the correct drivers. Cracked is NEVER an option!

I dunno, I talked to the local IBM guy that sold my friend the machine (we're not in the US) and he says there's nothing he can do for me.
I'd rather not go cracked myself, but if I have no other choice.... Dogwelder |

Try contacting IBM directly. The seller probably just doesn't want to be bothered with the extra work.

Ugh. Just hopped on over to IBM's site to see what they had to say. What a mess, no thanks.

Cracked may seem like a good option, but don't go down that path. Plus if you go to the extra effort to get the discs, when the system goes arse up again, you've got them ready

I bought a bunch of the earlier, with preloaded SE. Found that it wouldn't floppy boot but used nero to create a 622 DOS bootable and a SEDOS bootable and got control. Gave me total control. Transferred the install stuff over, got the drivers for everything off the IBM site and put it on CD with all the utilities I normally carry and had some good machines at $140, OS inclueded + the time.
