I am building a desktop pc for my web design business. I had an HP Laptop and the only thing that was salvaged was the memory and the hard drive (mem sold on ebay). The hard drive is now in a usb case so I can use it at work. My question is can I use this drive as the drive for my computer without having to buy a 3.5 hard drive also. My laptop HDD has all my programs and Win XP on it and I dont want to spend the money on a drive right now until I get enought to buy a BIG one. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Al
My System so Far: CASE - Diablotek Black Aluminum w/ red LED's CPU - AMD Athlon XP 2000+ MOBO - PCChips M811LU RAM - Kingston ValueRAM 184 Pin 128MB VIDEO - SAPPHIRE ATI RAGE128 PRO OPTICAL - Lite-On Black 52X CD-ROM |

Apparently yes you can use it in your desktop, but you need an adapter for it. I found one for sale here... you'll find the link to it just below the table

I know it can be used as a drive but can it be used as the "only" drive? Thanks, Alan

If it has a factory HP load of XP on it, you are going to have problems getting it running without a repair reinstall of XP, and then there will probably be a reactivation issue. Also, it's technically not legal, the factory XP load is only licensed to that computer and is not legally transferrable to another computer.
You didn't ask, but if you haven't already bought those parts, I'd rethink the parts list. PC Chips boards are bottom of the barrel, XP needs a lot more than 128mb ram to run well, and that video card is obsolete. |

Thanks for the info. I actually hadns bought the board yet (thank god) I got an ecs k7vta3 with an AMD Athalon XP 2200+ CPU instead thanks GLC. Also it really isnt legal even if the laptop went into the trash and this is the original drive? Thanks again

Correct - name brand computer OEM loads are only licensed to that computer and are not legally transferrable. Sounds draconian, but that's the way M$ works - and that's also why preloads come with a system-specific "restore disc" or no media at all.
ECS is in the PC Chips family too, but seem to be a bit better constructed. I really think for a *business* machine that you need to depend on, you can do better. The reason for building your own is not to save money (because you won't) - it's to get better component quality. |

I had a HP that the HD is under warranty, it is going bad, they had me run the diagnose program and it showed to be bad, was getting some weird error messages, they have sent me a new one but how can I transfer files from the old one to the new one, their is no master and slave possibility with a laptop is there? Thank-You. Ray.
