200 GB drive upgrade in 98 machine
I have a home built machine, about a year old, (P4-1.7) that I am still running W98 on. It has a 5.7 GB C drive and a 40 GB D drive. The 40 GB is on an ATA 100 Promise card. The 5.7 is on the mobo.
I just bought a 200 GB at Staples that came with an ATA 133 card. I want to create an 8GB partition on the new drive and copy my old C drive to it. Then create another partition as big as I can and copy the 40 GB to it. My questions are: 1. What is the biggest partition I can create using W98 for the D: partition? 2. Since I have 2 promise cards now, when I do the copying from the old 40 GB to the new drive, should I put both drives on the ATA 100 card; or put both drives on the ATA 133 card? 3. Does 8GB for a C: partition sound like a good choice? Thanks, Dwight |

Just use the controller card and the Install Disk that came with the drive to format it and partition it and you will be able to do what you want. Use the newest controller card for the 40 and 200 drive. Also you will need to keep the present boot drive in place until you get the controller card drivers installed and the Boot drive transfered to the new drive. After you have finished this you can then remove the old boot drive and go into the BIOS and change the Hard Disk Boot device from IDE to SCSI Device.

You cannot have a partition larger than 137gb with Win98, no matter what you are using for a controller. You will also need to patch your Fdisk to be able to see over 64gb properly.

He can use the full capacity, he just has to partition it so no partition is over 137 gigs.
