heatsink question

i got a heatsink that came with my thermaltake polo12 psu.. i belive it is aluminum with a copper base... anyway...
i touched the base with my bare hands by accedfent.. is this going to affect it now? and it got some dirt on it (i was doing housework and needed to move it) so how can i clean it w/o messing it up?

nooblark: clean it w/ rubbing alcohol and it will be fine

i3OSS: the 99% stuff is best, the 70% is mostly just extra water, but it sometimes does have oils and fragrances in it, which would leave a film on the heatsink.

Normally, "isopropyl" has just alky and sometimes water (as in 70%). "Rubbing" alky often does have oils, lanolins, and other stuff mixed in. Less than 100% isopropyl is OK, but just make sure to dry off the item being cleaned to remove the water left behind.

If it is unscented it will work but the 92%(think that is what is being sold now) is best. I usually just let it air dry as the iso takes most of the water with it when it dries. Personally I use unscented nail polish remover first followed by isopropyl alcohol. Acetone is a better solvent for oil removal and dries much faster. The isopropyl removes any oil or residue in the polish remover.

Speaking of things that get hot getting in contact with oil....

anyone ever seen a really hot lamp that has been touched by a finger and then turned on? If it's made with quality glass, it won't shatter right away like a regular light bulb can do when you put oil on it... as the oil burns, the the glass will melt, and the hot gases inside the lamp have a place to expand into and there will be bubbles of brownish glass everywhere there was a spot of oil. It's really quite something to see happen.
