Question Cable select or master/slave?

The last time I did a new computer build, hard drives and optical drives on an IDE channel were jumpered as master or slave. Then when I added an extra hard drive and CD burner to my present early model P4 computer a couple of years ago, cable select was used with the drives positioned accordingly on the cable-select IDE cable. In my new computer build, when I assemble the computer which I am accumulating components for, will I use cable select or master/slave with the IDE drives or does it matter (Asus P4C800-E mobo)?

It's generally recommended to use cable select. It's the easiest way to go, you don't have to deal with jumpers as much.

Either way works. I prefer setting the jumpers, but a lot of Forum members sugest going CS. In popular computer magazines you'll also hear both ways.

I belive to be able to use cable select you must use the 80 conductor ribbin and the 40 conductor ribbin must use the jumpers.

There are a few 40 conductor cables out there that have the wire blocked that allow cable select. Think I've seen 2 of all the cables I've handled.
The one I have in hand has no identification that indicates that it is used for C/S, I found it when things didn't work like I intended.

Cool

I use 80 wire and cable select for HD's and 40 wire and Master/Slave for opticals if on seperate channels. If on same channels I go with 80 wire and CS.
