Red face

am planning trip to motel where my notebook's modem has not been able to function before

it has something to do with the facilities switchboard??

last time i was able to get out 10% of the time by manually dialing..but this only worked 10%..i need something to work better!!

any thoughts---when i attempt to dial out, no connection is made..software dials but no tones/handshaking occurrs..the software merely disconnects.

i dont want to b computerless for 9 days ---(

comput=Dell Latitude LM P166MMX withb 56k pcmcia modm. My friend's notebook (compaq 133 with built in 56kfelx) does same thing.

this prob obly happens at this one location--i cld stay elesewhere but am determined to find way to solve this if poss.

thanx.

If it is a PBX system, you are lucky you didn't fry your modems. Some modems are protected. but not all. Ask if they have rooms with dataports.

Have you talked with the motel. My guess is that they are using number blocking. Anytime a call is placed outside the PBX number range it is tying up a trunk line. Smaller motels have physical links for their trunks and usually not very many, and don't want them tied up for extended periods by someone with a computer, because that would block guest from placing calls.
Note: PBX shouldn't have any affect on your modem, voltages are regulated just like phone co's.

I used to be a front desk manager at a Hotel believe it or not .

The problem usually is that different switches take different amounts of time after you dial the 9 or 8 for the outside line to give a second dialtone. Dial the ISP's number from your voice phone first, and get a rough guesstimate for the amount of time it takes to get the outside line. If it seems to take longer than usual, put more commas between your 9 and your number, etc.

ive tried those things-caing isp via voicephone (hv to dial 9 first) takes normal amount of time)---ive ried the comma trick>no go!

noone at motel can explain--they simply say computers will not work on their system!

i do have one of those devices which is suposed to enable modem opertion on a digital phone system but dont want to drag all that stuuf (and notebook too!) if prob wont work..

Has anyone used a device call 'Linestein" which sells for abt $150 which is supposed to enable modem useage from "any' type phone system?..you connect this device between notebook modem and motel phone>push button> and it "lenrs" the config of the motel phone system and adjusts to enable your modem to work?

i tried manually dialing about 40 times--twice i aws able to make a connection, but the other times: the software simply said cldnt make connection and disconnected.
