Grinding noises in DVD drive

At very low RPMs, my Sony 16x DVD player makes a grinding noise. It quickly vanishes as the drive speeds up and the DVDs play just fine in it. I was wondering if the grinding noise could be a sign of future problems, or is just an oddity.

How old is it? A grinding noise is not normal. I would return it if it is fairly new, or rma it back to the manufacure.
