cdrw drive install>>secondary ide disabled
I'm having trouble installing a CDRW drive. There was a pre-existing CDRom drive and I just pulled the IDE cable (& the power cable & sound cable) out of it and attached it to the new drive. The new drive wasn't recognized. I tried setting the jumper as cable select and as master. The drive doesn't appear in Device manager. I tried plugging the old drive back in & that isn't recognized either.
Msinfo says that the secondary ide controller has been disabled. If I go into device mgr in safe mode it shows the secondary ide controller and the cd rom device (the old one). How do I reenable the IDE controller? I've tried it in BIOS but no luck. I've installed these drives before but never get the same problem twice!! tia

When I tried to remove it in Device Mgr, I got the message that it was part of a multifunction device and couldn't be removed independently; it said to remove the multifunction parent, the PCI Bus Master IDE Controller. If I do this, will the Master IDE Controller be reloaded when I reboot? For sure?
thanks |

It's 98se, not xp on this machine-- last time I checked BIOS both IDEs were there.

If you delete the ide drivers windows 98se will detect new hardware upon boot and should reload them.

Run Regedit, navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENT CONTROLSET\SERVICES\VXD\IOS If there is a "noide" item in there, delete it. Reboot. |

I can remove the Master IDE controller but not the primary and secondary ide controllers in device manager. It still doesn't recognize the CDRW drive. I have the jumper set to Master. There's a zip drive that was on the same cable & it's recognized...BIOS shows the Secondary master to be the zip drive, no matter what the jumper setting (it doesn't help that the jumper settings on the zip drive & on the old CDRom aren't marked master/slave whatever).

Try a different IDE cable. Disconnect the Zip drive and try it with just the CDRW, try all 3 jumper settings.

It's taken me awhile to try this (sorry! too much going on!!)...however now that I've tried disconnecting the Zip and trying all 3 jumper settings, the cdrw still isn't recognized & the secondary ide is still disabled. any other ideas? (thank you so much for your help-- this site is really invaluable).

If the bios doesn't see the CDRW, either the drive is defective or your IDE cable needs to be replaced.
If the POST screen shows all drives, your drives are ok and cabling/jumpering is correct - if not, they aren't. Assuming all drives are seen at POST, boot into SAFE MODE and remove ALL cd drives, hard drives, zip drives, and IDE controllers in device manager, reboot. If the secondary still comes up flagged, look for that NOIDE key as I previously indicated. |
