Problem with My USB port
Dear Friends,
My home computer has the the following config: Celeron 433 Mhz+160MB RAM+810e mother board with buit in sound cardand VGA+17BG HDD+Windows 98 SE installed. As I did not have a USB port, I installed a hardware with 2 USB ports. The system identified the new hardware and asked for the 'Win98 CD'. After the showing the required drivers for USB, the port got installed. I have a 128 MB pen drive( external storage device) which had its own USB drivers to be recognised by the system. I installed the drivers and connected the device. Once the device is connected, the system identifies that new hardware is connected, but later it does not recognise the and work with the device- it exits after a message 'Unknow device'. So I could not use this device at my home. I recently purchased a Sony Digicam DSC P 72. I also have a USB interface. I installed the USB driver given along with the camera. Then connected the camera. system recoognised the new hardware- but again it identify this as 'Unknow device'. So again I could not download my photos from my camera. I tried both of the above devices at My office (with Pentium IV systems, 128MB RAM, Kobian motherboard with 40GB HDD, Windows 98). Both of them are working fine . Can any one help me to get these equipments work in my home computer? Regards, Srinath, India |

From what I understand, your pc is "forgetting" your settings. Have you checked the device manager? Maybe other USB drivers are turning newly installed drivers off.
Let me know how everything goes. |

I'm Not sure if this will help, but, do this. Go into device manager and highlight the usb with the ? next to it. Click Properties at the bottom and and follow the prompts about fixing the drivers. Hope this helps.

I tried the option to update the drivers of USB but this also did not help.
I am running Win98SE. Will installing XP would help solving my problem? |

I don't know if you'd want to run XP on that machine. So far none of the USB devices that you've plugged in to the USB port have worked. I would say the problem is with the USB port, either its hardware or drivers. In device manager, does the USB port show up with a '?' as well, or is it only the devices that you plug in to it? Does the USB port say it supports USB 1.0, 1.1 or 2.0? The devices you have should work with USB 1.1.
Are you using any USB extension cables? There could be a signal strength issue if you have a cable longer than the standard dictates. The only other thing that comes to mind when a USB device is recognized but won't function is that the port is not powered. I think that shouldn't be an issue here since the DSC P72 gets its power from battery, tho I've never tried plugging mine (I have the same camera) into a non-powered port. One other quick tip, in device manager, if you delete a device that has a '?' next to it, Windows will attempt to install the driver again next time it sees the device. I'd also try this, it can produce a different result than going through the Properties dialog for the device. Good luck. |

You may need some kind of special fix for win98 to get it to work. Is this device USB 1 or USB2.0? USB1 is almost 10 times slower than USB2.0. Sometimes a USB1.0 device will not work with USB2.0, etc.
Also, Your computer may not be fast enough. |

Dear Freinds,
Thank god, At last I was able ot get my above problem solved . As per the suggestions of my hardware vendor, I added one 4 port PCI USB1.1 card on to my mother board and my problem vanished. I asked for the drivers from Win98 CD and got them installed without any hitch. Now I am able to use my Pen drive as well as my digital Camera to my system. Thanks for all the friends who tried to help me out. Regads, Srinath India |

Dear friends,
One more additional information. Earlier my system was running on 64 MB RAM +new piece of 128Mb RAM. I was unable to instal WinXP on my system. After getting help from this forum, I removed the 64MB old RAM and made my system run only on new 128MB RAM. After doing this all my problems of installing WinXP solved fully. Amaxingly, all my problems related to USB never popped up after removing the old RAM. After this, my experience says that we should never mix different RAM sticks. This may be for the information of the other members. Regards Srinath India |
