Primary Slave Hard Drive Failure

Hi,

I've just installed a new Hard Drive in my Pc (160gb IBM Deskstar 7200rpm, 8mb Cache) and set it to Primary Master and installed XP Pro on it.

I put my Old Hard Drive (120gb Maxtor Dmax PLus 9, 7200rpm, 2mb Cache) into Primary Slave, left it there to transfer files over the course of a few days.

I then Reformatted the Drive and Partitioned it in to 3 parts. Everything seemed to work fine. However since then, when starting the computer it says:

"Primary Slave hard Drive Failure" "Press F1 to Continue or Del to enter Setup"

If I enter setup and then exit with or without saving changes, it then boots fine and Both Hard Drives work fine

Any Ideas, cos I'm not sure.

Thanks, Richolmes

Check the jumpering on both drives. If you are using an 80 wire Ultra ATA cable, you should be using Cable Select jumpering. The master goes on the end of the cable (black) and the slave in the middle (gray) - and the blue end goes to the motherboard.

Yeah, Both Drives are jumpered correctly as Master and Slave. I just checked the maxtor webiste to be sure and this seems fine.. And the Grey (middle) is in the supposed slave Drive and the Black end is in the Master.

On the Maxtor website, it does list a different jumper position for Cable Select so I will try that tommorow (its getting late)

It just seems weird to me that it will report a failure but then still work anyway after exiting the bios.

Any other feedback much appreciated

If you change one drive to Cable Select, you have to change both.
