case fan and power issues?

I recently purchased and attempted to install a 2 fan expansion card cooler. It sits outboard of your expansion cards and attaches using the same screws. It runs off of the system power supply. When I plug in and boot the system hangs. It seems like my hard drive just cycles and can't boot. The fan power plug is a male/female plug. I plug the male plug from my power supply into the female end of the fan plug. Is there something else I need to do?

You might try plugging it into another connector. Is this the one that fits into the PCI slot?

It attaches outboard of the cards just inside the side panel, the air blows across the cards. I tried differnet power plugs but with the same prob

What brand of PSU are you using? What are the system specs?

In its previous life it was a Gateway. Now its a &*^)(*&&*).

Maybe the power supply isn't enough. It's an Astec 200w. The MB is an Elite k7s5a, AMD 2100 athlon, 768 ram, Geforce 2 mx 440. Opsys is Win xp pro /w service pack. Maxtor 80gig hd in an inclose tray config. All real cutting edge stuff.
Jeez Gateway is cheap, I had a 486dx 66 custom built that had a friggin 300w power supply.
ANyway, thanks for the replies......

Other's opinions here may vary but I think 200watts is a little skimpy. Go over to the General Hardware forum and Bigandy has compiled a list of good and bad PSU's (btw, astec is on the good list). It should help if you are going shopping for a new PSU.

200 watts is way too little power for that system...with the Card Cooler, the PSU is probably struggling to power the system as it is. You'll need to replace it with at least a 300 watt PSU from a good maker.

And don't connect the fan between the power supply and the hard drive, you want the hard drive to be able to draw all the power it needs from the PSU at start up. Either connect the Card Cooler to it's own power lead from the PSU or connect it between the PSU and a optical drive.

Could also be that a fan on the cooler is faulty and pulling down the power supply voltage, try checking the cooler in another PC to eliminate that
