I'm helping my doctor with a computer problem and Win98 is not finding the USB mouse. The USB keyboard is working So I know that the port works.

With any USB device the software should be installed first, then the hardware. Is the old mouse still plugged in? Have you checked it's status in the Device Manager?

software first ??

normally windows detects the hardware, then installs the software for it.

At least all usb devices I installed - except one scanner where it was explicit written to install software first - first were plugged in and then get the software.

But, maybe the mouse needs the software installed first, that's possible.

what happens if you plug in a PS2 keyboard, and the mouse on USB. I've seen it before that you need an usb hub to get a usb mouse - keyboard combination working.

Well, yes, but the root hub should be sufficient.

I have an USB keyboard and a USB mouse, the keyboard with 4 USB Ports.

I had the mouse half a year before I got the USB keyboard, and I can tell you that there were no combination that doesn't work:

PS/2 keyboard, USB mouse on root hub -> OK
USB keyboard, USB mouse on keyboard hub -> OK
USB keyboard, USB mouse on root hub -> OK

That should not be the problem.

Bdunn, does really NOTHING happen when you plug in the mouse ?

I got it working this morning. PS/2 is not an option there are no PS/2 ports on this machine.

I dont understand why but by starting the computer once without the mouse attached and then shutting it down and restarting with the mouse attached it found the mouse again and it started working.

The deep aenigmas of windows. . .

I once had such an experience with my SBLive!, which refused to play correct DOS sound. I removed all cards there, just booted with the SBLive! and it worked. Even after putting in all the other cards, having the exact system even with the exact IRQs. . . it worked.

After such an experience I only was happy I got it working. The reason for it I still don't know. . .
