CMOS Checksum error - replaced battery, no effect?
A friend of mine dropped me in an old P1 computer that was giving the Checksum error and saying something about a floppy cable as well (which I guessed was connected). I bought a new battery and replaced it but I still get the same error. It says press F1 for BIOS and ESC to boot but when I do either it asks for a password, which the owner of the PC says they never used so don't know.
How do I recitfy the CMOS problem and/or overide this password? Thanks, JTH

Check to see if there is a set of "clear cmos" pins that can be used to reset the bios. If no pins, pull the battery and let the computer set for an hour or so to see if that clears things.

He said he bought a new battery. When he took out the old battery, that would clear the CMOS right? However, I know on some motherboards you have to use the jumper method.

How do you do the jumper method? Sorry, I don't understand as I've never done it before. Would taking the battery out for an hour make a difference? I only took it out for a few seconds to change it but if leaving it out for a while makes a difference I'll do that.
Thanks for the replies

JTH: If the mobo has the pins; there would be two pins someplace close to the battery. Near the pins it should be printed on the mobo something like "clear cmos" . Need to leave the battery out because there are capacitors on the motherboard that will hold a charge for a while and provide power to the bios chip.

I am doing a computer repair course at the moment and I have been told that factory default AMI CMOS Password is " AMI " and if your have an AWARD Bios then the password is " AWARD_SW " (all in capitals).

I left the battery out all night and put it back in today, planning to try Mynot's passwords. Turns out now I can get into BIOS or boot without any passwords. But I still get this error every time I start up:
Floppy Drive A: Failure I then have to either press F1 to enter BIOS or ESC to boot. Is the drive dead? Any ideas? |
