Presario Laptop reads DVDs, not CDs

I own an old laptop, a Compaq Presario 1700XL260 (PIII 500 MHZ, Kingston 512 MB SODIMM (2x256), Windows 98SE, floppy/DVDROM interchangeable bay). For some reason, the DVD-ROM drive (which can read CDs and DVDs) is only reading DVDs now. No trauma that I can recall to the drive. I used Compaq's recovery CD to reinstall Windows 98SE 'clean' and didn't help. The interchangeable floppy drive works fine when it's in the bay, and like I said the DVD drive reads DVDs fine, just not CDs. Suggestions?? I'd cost me more to pay for a new drive than it would to sell the darn thing.

Does it not read burned CDs, retail CDs, or both?

DVD drives have dual lasers, one for CD's and the other for DVD's - sounds like the CD laser has died.
