yeah, id be really scared too. not to mention the navy and aircraft carriers that all help to support those aircraft and missiles.
too bad the JSF (Joint Strike Fighter) isnt in producion yet, this would be good to test it out. well it might not, becase i dont think that Afghanistan has many planes that can even keep up with the existing US flighter planes.

Nominally 1500 meters/sec, about 4x the speed of sound in air.

quote from article:
Another new deadly weapon is the super-cavitating torpedo which can travel under water at the speed of sound before eventually launching into the air. that equates out to more than 3000 mph (!). do we have an airplane that flies that fast? |

Yes, we have planes that fly above the speed of sound, but do we have planes that can fly at 4X the speed of sound? I suggest you read the whole thread so you don't take something out of context.
Due to the situation, these discussions are emotionally charged enough without you talking down to us - the way you worded your comment was inappropriate. We are not stupid. I think we have been here before. |

oh, you have been here before glc? excuse me...
And to answer your question from before, "The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird is, to date, the fastest airplane ever to streak across the sky, even though it's more than 30 years old. Capable of speeds over 2200 miles per hour -- that's more than three times the speed of sound."-Nova So from my research we cannot yet go 3000+ mph in an aeroplane. |

OK, but how fast can a rocket fly? Like perhaps a NASA shuttle, or missile? I'd imagine they can go pretty fast.

As I recall, an ICBM 'could' launch from the heartland of America and reach Moscow in 32 minutes.
The F-22, the newest lockheed fighterjet and the fastest of it's kind, is capable of launching a laser-guided missle while traveling mach 2.5. That missile would hit a in-air target moving away from the source (F-22) and over 40 miles away in 20 seconds. You do the math. -Craig |
