F@H restarting after computer shutdown
Hey guys,
I've never had this problem before and I'm hoping someone a little more expirenced might be able to help me here. I starting folding for the 'Mech team a couple of weeks ago I guess, nothing too serious, but every little bit helps right . I did a couple of WU just fine (even if I did shut down the computer) but on this last one, strange problems. I'm doing that big long 400 protien again and I was up to about 230/400 or something and was going away for the weekend so turned off my comp. When I came home, turned the comp back on, it was back down to 0/400 with no extra WU completed. I just kinda chalked it up and said oh well, and started it again. I was back up to 170/400 or so and turned off my computer, turned it back on and again, back down to 0. I don't know why it would only start doing it now, but it's driving me up the wall. I'm using the GUI without the screen saver if that counts for anything. Thanks in advance.

A few things to think about: The WU's have to be completed in a certain amount of time. So if you took to long to complete the WU, you get nothing for it. Another thing is that when you first restart the client, it has to load all the files and find where it stopped off. That doesn't happen right away.
However, this may be another one of those quirks with the GUI version. I'm running the text console version as a service, and I haven't had any problems so far. I'm not completely sure if this is your problem however, perhaps we should wait for some of the guys who are better at troubleshooting F@H, like Kov-Ice or Lil' Jimmie. |

The comptuer I'm running F@H on is an AMD 2000+. I never realized that there was a time limit on the folds. How do you check or find out that limit? I knew that when the client was restarted that it would take a second or two for it to kick in, I was used to that. I am wondering though, does saving info every few minutes like you said you do make a difference? And I guess, if it does, where exactly would I find the setting for it?

well on an AMD 2000+ if its on 24/7 you shouldn't have to worry about the time limit it will get them done in plenty of time. but if you would like to know anyway. right click the icon (red flower next to time) and goto status then my folding. a web page will open, on the page click unitinfo.txt that will show you % done, download date, protein name and due date.
i'm not sure if saving every few min really does anything but it can't hurt to try i guess. right click the icon and goto configure. click the advanced tab and the option is in the middle of the screen. HTH |

What OS and which Folding client are you using? If you are under Windows98 and you are using the Text Console, you must close the F@H box with Ctrl-C. If you use the X in the corner of the box, or if you just shut down Windows without closing it, you lose all of your previous work. Ctrl-C allows it to save the work.dat file before shutting itself down. HTH.
Edit: NM, I didn't read very carefully the first time. You said GUI... As stated above, the GUI is problematic at times, so you could try changing to the Text Console version. I've not heard of that being one of the problems, tho...

Thanks for the advice guys. I generally leave my computer on unless I'm going to sleep (makes my room a little hotter) or if I know I will be out of town. Checking on the due date, it says Sept 12 so that should not be an issue. However, when checking in the unitinfo.txt it does say I started it the 8th of July even though it has restared twice. I did check on the checkpoint saving time and it's already set at 10 or so minutes. kinda has me goofed. On a funny side note, I turned my comptuer on today when I got back from out of town and it was where I left off. I'm sure there is something really dumb I am doing or not doing that is causing it to jump back to zero. That being said, I would like to know what it is as the problem is only happening every now and then. Does that ctrl c work even though I'm using the graphic client running win xp home?

If you are clearing any temp files you may deleting the F@H files, I know if I shut down F@H and run diskepper it will have the same effect and start all over.

Win XP automatically saves and shuts down the client for you, although Ctrl-C does work to close the Text Client in XP. Since you have the GUI, tho, I guess that's no matter. Are you running only one client, or are you trying to run two? I wonder if adding the -local tag would help find the .dat files back every time?

You know lil Jimmie, I have been cleaning out temp files often lately. I know this might sound dumb, but do you know where exactly they are located so I make sure I don't toss them? I am only using one client to let you know, but just for kicks, how exactly would I add that tag you're talking about Kov-Ice? Just to give you a little update, I've not had it reset on me for a while now, which is of course a good thing. But still, thanks for the help so far. I will master folding yet!!

The tag is actually for running two clients at once on an HT machine, so as to be sure they are working and saving to their local folders. If things are working now, I wouldn't mess with it.
However, you can add other tags in the command line to help your folding work more smoothly. I'd wait for Jimmy to confirm, as I think he is more familiar with AMDs, but you may want to add the "-forceasm" tag. Right click on the F@H shortcut, and you'll see a line that says Target. At the end of that line, add a space and "-forceasm" without the quotes. I believe that helps AMDs fold faster. |
