i'm going to try to get them folding with my name but if not then even if they make their own name it will still (hopefully) be for the mech.

Now that would be impressive. Highly unlikely, but impressive.
Just getting your school to go along with it would be great, esp. if they let you set them up with your user name and our team. GL!

Foldin' For PCMech!

update: well so far i have talked to the science dept and they are hooked. they have a "teacher late night" on thursdays but the head of the dept wont be there this thursday. next thursday we will present the idea to the administration and see how it goes.
untill then i got my electronics teacher to let me build a folding-farm in his room and got 21 'junk' pcs from our school IT. they range from a few p75s, a bunch of PII 233s and a few PII 350+. i can OC most all of them to get a bit more out of them. a friend of mine added them up and came up with about 6ghz total i think. i will get the pcs on friday and hopfully get them running next week. i will need some parts tho. the IT took all RAM and HDDs to use on other systems. if anyone has any spare HDDs (1GB or more is fine) or pc-100 and would donate them to me or i can pay shipping. also i could use a switch to connect them all. do they make a 25-30 port switch? anyone have one? thanks! more updates to come..... |

We have a 24 port hub here at work I've been ok'ed to sell for $20 (free shipping).
Looking at eBay, are going for slightly more. It is a CentreCom FH724SW, and I know it works as we were using it about 3 months ago. Let me know if you want it. |

I've got a bunch of 16 port rack mount hubs (10 mbit) that I would be willing to give you 2 of them for shipping + $10 for my time and packing materials.
I have some hard drives. They ran Windows NT 4.0. They are heavy, so shipping won't be cheap on them. |

update: i got the computers yesterday, the IT must have thrown some of them away durring the week. i only got about 12-15 and he had 21 total. i also found a program overfoldix knoppix LSTP. with this i will only need 1 HDD in a "server" and the other clients will boot from that, fold and save on it. so now all i need is a switch.
faulkner i will take your hub and RAM. PM with total price. N8 i will take both of your hubs. PM we with total price. i don't need any HDDs but if anyone has some pc-100 RAM sticks for cheap let me know!!! thanks! |

update: i have contacted faulkner and mr n8 and hopfully will be getting some parts from them. i am having problems getting overclockix on the "folding server" but i think i can figure it out....
some of the machines don't have enough ram (128mb min) to boot from the network and wont run right so their part of my "HDD-farm" they each have a HDD folding runs on. anout 3 of them are running but i don't have enough cable yet to connect them all up to the internet. the science dept talked to the principal and hes all for it!!! ![]() the only thing ledt to do is get our school IT to let me install it which could be a problem. we have 3 ITs so tomorrow morning i'm going to met with 2 of them and see what they say so i should know by tomorrow if we will be getting a boost or not...... wish me luck!!!!!! EDIT: i will be putting the farm on a different username for now (Enhanced_Farm) just to see what all it can do but will be puting it back in my name after a few weeks or so. Why are you trying to overclock your server? That's not smart.

Any advice on how i might get a rather large group to join the cause ( i just joined btw).. say indiana university?? I know at the bloomington campus alone, we have a 200+ computer cluster of 1Ghz + Dells that sit idle from about midnight to 8 AM... plus hundreds of other clusters, in dorms, class buildings, that just aren't used after the classrooms close. add to that the machines sitting idle at the other 7 (maybe 8) campuses, and you've got some real computing power. I noticed that there is an IU team, but without any members.... i know this is a worthy cause, 3/4 of my parents (divorce/remarriage etc.) are in the medical field, so i've been exposed to some nasty stuff. It's awful what some of these diseases can do to a person, and if all we have to do is donate some extra CPU cycles... that requires NO effort on our part, just the effort to sign up. so yeah, any ideas about how i might go about arranging this? or evev get the ball rolling?

You'll need to start by presenting the idea around to some of the staff to try to get an ally. Maybe there's someone in charge of a lab or something that you could interest in the idea. Show them the website and/or one of the info movies they've put together. Ultimately tho, I'm going to say it'll probably rest in the hands of the IT dept there. So once you get some backing, you'll then have to convince someone there to do the install. Good luck!

Foldin' For PCMech!

well our school IT hasn't been there for the past week or so and its hard to get a few min to talk to him but i finally did yesterday. it turns out that he was big into seti awhile back but got out of it for some reason. i gave him the power point i made and printed off some info from stanfords website and gave it to him. he said he would look over it this weekend and then talk to the board of education on monday about doing it!
so now i have the entire science dept, the electronics teacher, the school IT, and the school principal all for the idea. cross your fingers that the BOE will allow it. i hope to have another update on monday. stay tuned and watch for the mech to be climbing the charts!!!!! |
