Question Confused

I've downloaded the folding@home graphical client and I've been running it for under a day. However I'm a bit confused, on my stats page it says that I have completed 3 work units. I've been watching the graphical client closely and it was working on one with 7500 frames. Anyway, it got close to the end 6500 then sent the results, and started something new. So I haven't really completed any work units.

Also today it started on something new again, worked on it for about 3 mins, opened the connections, sent the results, and then started on something new again.

What's going on?

EDIT: OK I've been having a look at the log file and I see this message a lot:

Quote:
Simulation instability has been encountered. The run has entered a state from which no further progress can be made. This may be the correct result of the simulation, however if you often see other project units terminating early like this too, you may wish to check the stability of your computer (issues such as high temperature, overclocking, etc.).
Temperature seems to be it. My CPU temperature is 52.5 degrees Celsius, I can't say I've ever noticed it that hot. It's an AMD Athlon 2600XP, it has a "Wisper rock fan" on it, suppose I'll have to look into getting a new CPU fan (can't say I have problems with games which is what I generally use the computer for). I've reduced the CPU usage percent in the hope that that will reduce the CPU temperature.

That's a quite normal temperature for an Athlon XP under 100% load. Nothing to worry about.

Thanks, that's reassuring. However I get that message a lot - and I think that's the reason why none of the work units run to completion.

Are you overclocking? Test your memory with memtest.

Only overclocking my graphics card and that's only when I'm going to play games.

Memtest is not a tool I'm familar with, so I'll tell you the results when I get them.

I ran the test (I let it run for 2 passes) and it didn't find any errors. I'll run it overnight tonight to let it do all the passes.

Thanks for your help.

Ok well it was early when I first read your post (no coffee yet) and I didn't catch the fact that you are running the graphical client and that may very well be the problem. It has been known to create issues with many systems and is often due to OpenGL graphics.
Many of us run F@H as a service and have little to no trouble at all unless we push our cpu overclocks way too far.

Well switiching to the console client doens't appear to have helped either.

I have seen this twice

Quote:
Completed 0 out of 1000000 steps <0>
Gromacs cannot continue further.
Going to send back what have done.
And once again I saw the system instability encountered.

Perhaps I should add that I volunteered my computers processing power to "World Grid Computing" project (ran by a United Devices client). I had no problems running it but I questioned the "for-profit" stance of the company.

Ok this is an odd one, could you list your entire system specs as well as the log file. I don't think it's a temp issue... possibly a memory error but it sounds as if the system is stable except for the F@H client. We might have to dig around on the Stanford F@H forums to see if this is a common problem with the WU your client is trying to fold.

I think I may have found the problem. My avast antivirus appears to have been causing problems with the processing of data. I'll keep my eye on it and post again soon.

My full system specs are:
Abit NF-7 motherboard
Athlon 2600 XP
1 GB RAM (corsair value select)
Radeon 9800 pro 128 MB (Sapphire, if that matters)
40 GB hard Drive with approximately 20% free space (if that helps you at all).

That's really all I can think off to list. I've tried to be as specific as I can.

How do I go about getting the log file form the text only version? I have found the page with the commands to enter but I don't know how to get the prompt to enter them (if that makes sense).

Thanks again for your time.

The FAHlog.txt file can be found in the FAH folder within the Program Files.

Some programs or users that clean temp files can cause problems with F@H, but I've never heard of an antivirus program causing problems.

Here's the log file. I'm actually swithing between the graphical and the text only versions to try and pin down the error, but they both seem to be working fine with the anti-virus shield off.

I'm not too familiar with avast but I'm sure there has to be a setting to allow it to ignore the client.

Thank you for your help. To let you know the graphics card is not overclocked at the moment. My RAM is PC3200 (400MHz) but runnning at 333MHz since the 2600XP's maximum FSB seems to be 333MHz. I've registered on the tech support forums so I'll start posting myself.
