hehe, I thought that last night. Dates match up, and look at the points Mystery_Folder has put up. N8's ranked in the top 1,000 tho. He wouldn't go through the trouble of reconfiguring all those clients away from his ID? Would ya, N8?

You wouldn't think so, but who knows. Unless Mr. N8 let's us know (haven't seen him around here for a long while) or if the Mystery_Folder reveals him/herself, we won't really know.

Sorry about the production loss. We have started using Symantec for our firewalls, and recent updates have blocked all F@H servers. I've tried to use anonymous proxies, but to no avail. I may start folding again with my home PC.
Yes, I am the mrn8 of Anandtech, also. |

i see that you must have found some time to fix your problem, you seems to be getting back on your feet, and just in time too! got a few new members, a new top producer, faulkner added some new machines and is now a top producer and i will soon be back in the game.
think we can top out at 20k ppd? only need 5k more.... |

Enhanced,
I am working with the Director where I work to set up 13 computers in the students computer lab on a network to do folding. The CPU's are 2.4ghz Intel's in Dells. She likes the idea, she is a biologist with a PhD herself. She just wanted me to ask two of the scientists I work with who do protein research in their labs to get feedback about the worthiness of Stanford's protein folding. One wrote back saying it is worthy research and I am still waiting for the second scientist to give her approval. Once I have the Directors permission I need to to make arrangements with our IT guy to load the software. He has already voiced his opinion that he does not like software like this that is running out of his control...(he is a bit of a control freak)...how do I reassure him that its not going to have adverse effects on "his" computers and network. He also voiced concern about this software being a bandwidth hog...again, how do I reassure him? We have a T1 or T10...Not sure and probably about 50 to 70 people with computers where I work. Not all are accessing the internet at the same time but some download scientific periodicals and the grad students here have been told not to download music. Just casually asking around where I work, the scientists like the idea and say they would be willing to add the software to their machines so long as it does not affect their computers. How can I reassure them it wont affect their computers in a few words...not by giving them a huge FAQ to go look up for themselves..(they dont have all the time in the world to go researching Folding@Home)

David, here are some movies about F@H that you might have the individuals in question take a look at. I think they're more effective as well as much quicker than reading an FAQ or paper on the project.

Thanks Andy
The first two sites link to a single site that is 100% ads. The third link is an EXCELLENT video..but it links to someone elses team. The fourth link sent me to Georgia .... (404 error code). Other than not being able to play games with Open GL..are there any other problems with this software other than that? I don't want to make an ass of myself by loading software onto the computers of the people I work with only to have it cause problems. Thanks Last edited by David M; 08-23-2005 at 08:17 PM. |

if i were you, i would load the text-only version and set it up as a service. there is no errors at all as far as i know in doing it this way, plus endusers can't close it unless they use task manager, so it will fold as long as the computer is on.

David, maybe have them load one pc first for test case. No problems in 2 - 4 weeks, add others.

Excellent idea...I would imagine the text only version allows it to run a little faster?

I think it does run slightly faster. Whether you'll notice it...debateable. If you want to order the different ways of running F@H in terms of speed I think it would go: As a service, text console, GUI. But yes, the text console is less problematic because it doesn't create those annoying OpenGL conflicts.

I would recommend using the text-only console, but install it as a service as andy mentioned (one of the options when starting it up). This way, if someone logs out of their machine, it's still folding. Out of the 4 machines I'm running F@H on (all as a service), they are all running perfectly and only one is actually noticable that it's there. That's only because it's a Dell (P4 3.2 HT) with that giant 120MM CPU fan ducted from the back. The PC runs fine, just a little extra noise from the fan to keep Mr. CPU cool.

well, looks like mrn8 is back to nothing again, i think what is was is that when stanford updated the lost WU's mrn8 had some and when he got credit for them, like the rest of us, his production jumped.
too bad he isn't back in the game!
