Questions About Folding
I just got on of my computers folding yesterday and I want to get the other one going. I was wondering, if I am folding on one use account and logout of it, does it continue to fold, or do I have to be logged in for it work? I was also wondering, my CPU usage graph is showing 100% all the time now. Is that because folding use the background resources to work, so if it use all of them up?
Just curious, thanks!

Yes, folding uses all resources which is why it shows your cpu usage as 100%, this is normal. It doesn't "use them up" butuses what you not using. If you start using a lot of CPU then folding backs off and lets you work then when your done it kicks back in. It will run under all users and even when no one is logged in only if it is setup as a service using the text-only version.
btw, welcome to the team!

Did you download and install the "text only" client instead of one of the graphical ones?
It's the one with the built in Windows-Service install option and comes with a read-me on how to go about it. If you didn't wait till the current work unit is completed, you might want to set your firewall so that F@H has to ask when it sends the finished unit thus alerting you, then uninstall the current graphical program and get the text one. Make sure you copy all your old information back at sign up, name, team and so on, and follow the instructions for setting up folding as a service.

Well, on the computer I am already folding on is either logged in or turned off, so I don't need the text one for that, right? So on the second computer, I just need to download the text-only client and install it as a service?

Alright, cat. Glad to have you join.
Curious, what made you think about adding your comps to the project?

Well, I had read about folding here in the forums and wanted to start, but one of my computers had to many problems and would run even worse with the folding going on. The other one (the one I have it setup on now) had Linux and I could not get it to work. So now that I have Windows installed on this computer and I can run it here and now that I replaced the problematic computer with a much better one (450Mhz P3 128MB RAM to 2.66Ghz P4 512 RAM) I can fold on that one too.
Another question, if two computers are folding on the same account, do they work on the same thing at the same time, or do they work on seperate things? Thanks! Last edited by catacon; 10-23-2005 at 12:17 PM. |

If you're folding on two different computers, they will both be doing different projects. They will send a different project to each computer. I want to thank you for joining our folding team. Thanks.

Well, finished my first WU. The program had to shut down though after it finished. After I restarted, it said the Wu went through OK. Any reason for this? Also, when do you become listed on the team-member score list?

The tallying is at their end and the results should show up in a few hours, though it can take a day or so.
I don't do anything with the program when it finishes a work unit. It sends the results back and gets a new work unit in a matter of minuts or hours, depending on the state of the servers. Check to see if you have it set to "Pause When Done" if you want to change that. |

I don't have it set to "Pause when done". This error was a Windows error, saying that the program was not responding and needed to close.

If that happens again go to the folding forum here : http://forum.folding-community.org/
and post in the Windows section. They should figure out what's what in short order. |

Is it safe to move the folding files? I accidentely installed the program onto the desktop so all the files keep appearing on there. Can I make a folder and put all the files in there and still have it run properly and if so where should I put it? If not, how do I uninstall it? It works, but it's just in the wrong spot.
Thanks! |

What you want to do is copy the work folder and reinstall the client. I create a folder called FAH under c:\program files\ and install folding there. Where ever you decide to put it copy the work folder into that folder and place the console.exe file there as well then reinstall it. It will pickup working where it left off.
If you havn't even downloaded any work yet then just delete all the files and create a new directory (c:\program files\fah) and install there. EDIT: Some actually do something similar to this on a regular basis... When they get a new WU, say a QMD, they may move it to a machine that can get a betetr ppd with the given WU and since you have about 60days for the deadline then you should make it with no problems. EDIT2: btw, welcome to the team!

Well, I cut and pasted everything, but two files to c:\program files\FAH. I can't cut the work folder or FAHlog, it says they are being used by another program. Any ideas?
EDIT: I just ran the console and setup everything and it's working, but I can still not delete those files. |

i would guess that the folding console is still running and using those files, use ctrl+alt+del to end it and delete that way.

The application doesn't show up anywhere. But now I can delete the files. How can I tell if the program is doing anything?

If you hit Ctrl+Alt+Del, then click the Processes tab, you will see the amount of cpu usage.
Or, download Electron Microscope III, which is a really cool piece of monitoring software. It gives all kinds of info on what's going on with your fold. |
