That's a really misleading headline in that article. SETI isn't going anywhere; they are just using different software. I've been crunching for SETI using BOINC for over a year now. The software is far more useful and far more fair in terms of credit granted than the old SETI software.

SETI, Search for extra-terrestrial intelligence, kicked off what became the distributed computing movement.
SETI is gone as we knew it and it's totals will be frozen though you can still keep hunting for aliens using BOINC.

It's only the software that is changing. Why do people think that SETI itself is disappearing?

The website is http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/

I think that Folding@Home is going to move to BOINC eventually too. The nice thing about BOINC is that you can attach to as many compatible projects as you want, and specify how you want to allocate your processing time. Thus, you could sign up to five different projects and do 20% for each, or 60% for one and 10% for the other four, or any combination possible.

I am crunching both SETI and Climate Prediction Dot Net at a 2:1 ratio.

Nice, never knew that about BOINC...

F@H has been working on setting up a port with BOINC, but there are no plans to switch over completely. They will continue to develop their own software client (which is established, much smoother, and mistake free), while trying to allow BOINC users to donate through that medium as well.

I got an email about this yesterday. I know they switched to BOINC awhile back and took the original client off their website for download. It still would connect and do work but they just took it from the download page. Does this mean that now they are going 100% BOINC? The stats and such will be frozen leads me to believe this.

I think the idea behind BOINC is a good one but I also think that DC projects should still offer their own clients like F@H is doing. Thats just me, I never did like "all-in-one" things.

I'm using BOINC now for over a year. Before that I ran Seti Classic for about 2,5 years and Folding for about 1 year. Liking them both I had a problem, since I didn't like to switch manually between both programs and my computer back then wasn't really handling the 2 apps very well. So when BOINC came out about a year ago or so I switched. I mainly switched just because I think this kind of DC is the way to go and will make DC only more popular and accesable. Next to that DC closes closes the gap between science and the public.

While I don't think the classic way SETI was researching was the way to go (only hunting for aliens in a small part of the sky), I decided to stop Seti, also in BOINC. I went on crunching for "Climate Prediction" but since a while I restarted Seti because I heard Seti has changed their way of doing research and I believe they are scanning more parts of the sky now and use the analysed data for more variate purposes, if I'm not mistaken.

Still, Seti was the basis for DC (and indirectly BOINC) and I think that this pioneering work is being payed off by other projects that use BOINC nowadays. I can only say: bravo and thank you Seti (Classic) for all the effort.

PiC

P.S. I just hope Folding@Home will join the BOINC platform. I left the Folding project just because they don't use BOINC.
