emIII on multiple machines
Hey guys and gals,
I am trying to set up emIII to recognize the client I just installed on my mom's computer. I was assuming I just had to add a box and put in her CPU info and locate to her folder (which i shared on my network) and then emIII would start to recognize it. But whenever I hit save, it gives me the "only the name and CPU info will be changed" message. How can I get this to see her console? also, when I get this working I don't want a check mark next to her info because then it will run on my machine, correct? thanks steve |

Set up both machines on a Home Network and Share the Folding folder on your mom's pc. Then point emIII to that folder and add that client as one to monitor.

If you're using the browse to folder button and finding your mom's computer, it should be working. Unless you're highlighting one of the box names in the bottom window and it thinks you're trying to change the info, instead of adding a new box.
Try going back into Options, and then press the Browse button directly without hitting anything else. Maybe?

ok I got it working now. thanks guys. I had been hitting add new box when something in the lower box was already highlighted and thus it thought I was trying to edit that box, not add a new one with a different path. thanks

another question
i have one more question. I want to reduce the load on my network since it is kinda slow, and only want my emIII to check the status of my mom's computer every few minutes or so. can I adjust this somehow? i've looked around and haven't seen anything. thanks

I can't imagine that it takes up too much bandwidth. You could just run the program when needed and close it after you check rather than leaving it running in the background.

yea I didn't think it takes up much bandwidth, my only concern was that when I open up "my network places" and then go to my home workgroup, it takes a while to get into my mom's computer and we are connected to the same router. not sure why but I get an hourglass for about 20 seconds when I first try and access a shared folder on her computer. i haven't noticed any problems with emIII though and I 've been running it all night so I guess its fine. thanks

You could always try FahMon, I think it uses less bandwidth but I'm not 100% sure on this. Both EMIII and FahMon are very good programs to use.

I checked in the EMIII thread at the folding forums: TheWeatherMan (maker of EMIII) said that only a few bytes are transferred each check, so it should make no difference in bandwidth really.

ok thanks kov and enhanced. i mainly wanted to know because I didn't want to put any drag on my mom's computer's network or anything, though she is happy to be folding (even though she doesn't have to do anything!).
