I'm curious about "-advmethods". I tried it out on one of my text-only clients and it ran in a separate window - apparently independent (or at least trying to be independent) of the WU's already running on the system. I assumed that it was a switch that would enable one of my clients to run the new QMD's once it finished the WU it was working on. How does this work? I want to squeeze every drop of power out of this thing I can get.
EDIT: I should mention I'm attempting this on a P4 system not listed in my sig. |

If you're using -advmethods on one of the machines in your sig, you still won't be assigned any QMD wu's. QMD's are a P4 only work unit. This is one of the best set up explanations I've found:

Thanks PR. So "-advmethods" is added to the registry key? I was adding to the shortcut which I guess would explain why I was getting a new window. I've found the registry line for one of my clients using regedit and, as I understand it, need only add " -advmethods" (including beginning space minus quotes) to the end of the line in order to start getting QMD's. I'm doing this on a work machine - I've got the OK to fold but I don't want to screw anything up. Can someone tell me whether I'm on the right track here? I want to make sure this works properly so that (cross my fingers) I can talk to the systems manager about getting the other 8-10 P4's in our office folding *drools*.
Once I change the registry, I'm also assuming that I'll start picking up QMD's once I finish the current WU. Sound right? |

Yup, you're on the right track. QMD's will be assigned periodically. You don't get them all the time. These registry tweaks just configure the system to be ABLE to accept and run QMD's.

Foldin' For PCMech!

Just to inform you, there are not going to be anymore QMDs for awhile. Stanford is working on the next batch of them. If we are lucky AMD systems will be able to run the next ones.
Also note that along with the -advmethods flag you also need 512mb of ram or more. You can still config the machines for QMDs even tho there are none right now then as soon as they come back you should start getting them on the machines. Best of luck in getting those other machines as well! I have a folding powerpoint that I made awhile back. You can use it if you think it will help.

Hmm... all things considered, maybe I'll just leave the setup as is for a while. The P4 gave me a big WU boost already. Thanks for the info PR and enhanced.
