New Intel Due Core coming this week
I have never used or owned a duo core system before, but my new desktop from Sony, which will arrive this week, has one. I bought it not for processing power but for multi media, sound/music, the tv tuner, learning, etc. Sorry I did not build one myself, please don't flame me for that....lol!
However, I will also be using it for Folding at Home. I am going to ask this on the FAH forum as well, but is it easy to separate the processes onto separate processors? I am not very technical, but if it is possible to get the FAH to operate solely on its own processor i would appreciate some direction. I considered posting this on the tips and tricks forum, but finally decided it was best placed here. Most likely the processes will decide on their own how to use the two processes, but if there are easy ways for me to separate them I would like to know this up front when I install the various applications. I also considered posting this on the DC forum, so if mods feel it is best there, please move it. System is: Intel Core Duo Processor T2400, 2 GB RAM. EDITED TO ADD: I have spent some time on the FAH forums asking these questions, and have an answer to my questions above. Right now, I may want to set up separate " instances " of the FAH software, but I don't have to. It seems the easiest thing for me to do for the short term is to read up on the new software being developed for SMP and Duo Core, but not to think I will have to spend much time configuring the software right up front. By the time my new system shows up I will likely have a better understanding of how other users have set up their duo core systems to run FAH. Last edited by TallTravel; 10-30-2006 at 11:15 PM. |

Foldin' For PCMech!

Yup, just install it.... folding can only utalize 1 core/cpu. I have a system with 2 500Mhz PIII's and if I only run 1 instance of folding then only 1 processor is running it. I also have an AMD 4800+ X2 which runs 2 instances of folding as well, one on each core.
If your worried about performance loss due to running it on both cores, there will be none. The only reason I noticed it on my system was when playing NFSMW this weekend. I have only 1GB of ram and have both -advmethods and BigWU turned on on my folding clients which caused my to use up all my ram which would slow my gamming down. Once I get a second gig of ram I'll never notice it.

Yes, and my new system has 2GB of RAM. I know relatively little about technology like this anymore, but I do know: lots of RAM is usually good. So I got 2GB. How, specifically, does FAH allow me to set up two separate instances? When I set it up this weekend on my AMD Turion 2.19 system, I really did not do anything to " set it up ", just installed it like a very simple Windows program, and it ran on its own. |

To install 2 instances you will need to either run 1 graphical and 1 text-only OR 2 text-only clients. The best way is 2 text-only because you have less problems. Its very easy to install 2 instances.
Simply create 2 folders, I call mine Core 1 and Core 2. Download the text-only client from stanfords website and save a copy in each folder. Then start with Core 1 (or whatever u called the first folder) and install it by folling out the info as it asks its questions (name, team number, etc) When it gets to the "Machine ID" make sure its set to 1. Once finished goto the second folder and do the same only make sure the "Machine ID" is set to a number other than 1 (the number 2 sounds logical so its what I used). Restart the computer and your done! You can check task manager to make sure it working right. |
