Size of your first WU

Hey all,

Just hopped on the folding train. I didn't really expect a 20,000 frame WU on the first go, but hey, I guess its important!

It says it'll take till March next year to finish...how much do you figure its worth?

So back to my original topic, what was the size of your first WU?

Thats just an estimate, after F@H completes a couple of hundred frames, it recalculates. You should see a big drop in time. Mine usually run in the 12 to 15 sec. per frame rate.
and don't be surprised at relly big WU's, I've had several at 50,000 frames.
And there are two running on my other box at 125,000 frames each.

log on to www.folding.stanford.edu/stats.html

you can get descriptions of the WU's and point values

Welcome to the team! Its good to have you!

As DSCHIEF has already pointed out, 20,000 frames is probably average, there are some pretty big units out there. Im going to assume you are running the GUI client right now. I would advise switching over to the console (CLI, text-only) client as it is much more stable. The GUI client sometimes has problems with OpenGL in games and some screensavers and can crash while the console has none of these problems. Its a little different to setup but its worth it! Let us know if you need some help.

Happy Folding!

Man, I can't even remember... Seems like 400 frames might have been a large one back then.

hitch, once you get the console set up, you can download the EMIII utility. It's a great way to keep track of your folding without worrying about the OpenGL probs of the screensaver or GUI.

I do have one reservation though...

Call me stingy, but I'm not sure I want my processor maxing out at every chance it gets. I know I can turn it off, but realistically I am far too concerned about this computer (it comes with not being able to afford another one, I guess). Can someone just say something convincing and calm my worries?

Maxing out my CPU every second I am on it. I need it to last a long time.

Here's a page that deals with that question in the F@H Wiki.

I've run dual clients 24/7 on one overclocked P4 processor for over 3.5 years without a hitch. I have it set the same way on a couple of other boxen as well. As the entry says, simply keeping an eye on your temps is the real concern. As long as you blow the dust bunnies out of your HSF every once in a while, you shouldn't have a worry.

I guess that makes sense. I'll be looking to those sweet new APUs from AMD (if they are good) by the time this thing is ready to retire.

As Kov already stated, as long as you watch your temps you should be fine. I used to have a few PII 233's running folding and they ran fine till the day I got rid of them, Panama Red (Mystery Folder) has a 233 running right now without problems.

As long as you keep an eye on your system, which you should do from time to time anyway, I feel there is less than 1% chance of anything going wrong because of folding.

I don't know if you could put a percent chance on it, but I'd wager it would be even far less.
