Jumping in??
Hi all,
Have been considering contributing to F@H for a while, but hesitated b/c I was concerned that having my cpu run constantly would generate excess heat and slow the system down when I actually had something to do. Have concluded that there's no way in heck my cpu is gonna hit 60C, so I figure why not, I'll do it. 1 question. I've read something in here about a GPU client, and that it's so fast that the CPU has to be dedicated to feeding it info....so does it make more sense to use the GPU than the CPU? Or is my processor fast enough to run both the GPU and CPU clients? Thanks!

I think you would have to change out your video card, check out the FAQ section on the FAH webpage they are pretty specific about only supporting ATI cards, and only the 1900 series

Ah. You're right, they are only working with ATI right now (something about 32 bit floating point operation support). Not changing GPUs (sorry) so I guess it's CPU client for me. Thanks!

yeah, the highend ATI cards are the only ones that can be folded on at this time. The GPU is MUCH faster and more powerful than current CPU's so more actual science work is done with the GPU's but only specific cards can run it.
the cpu client is still of great help, tho, and im sure i speak for us all when i say, Welcome to the Team!

Thanks for the welcome!
Am chugging away on my first WU (Will finish sometime on wednesday). Does it make sense that I don't show up in any of the statistics pages yet? Is it just waiting for the first completed WU, and then it'll show me in the system? |

Correct. The EOC Stats Pages typically update every three hours, so you should show up soon after completion of that protein. Again, Welcome!

Another question: (I know, I know...)
The WU I'm working on is taking FOREVER. Is it normal for one WU to take upwards of 3 days to complete (Running pretty much 24/7 on a 4000+). I read on Stanford's website that their average WU benchmarked at 9 hours on a 500MHz celeron.... Did I just get a huge one for my first WU? It says 20000 frames. |

9 hours on a 500mhz celeron? i dont think thats right. average seems to be anywhere from 1-3 days to finish a unit. a lot depends on the hardware and a little on the unit itself. over a year ago there were units called QMD's which were super fast on Intel machines, you could get 2 or 3 done in a single day!
but like i said tho, average is 1-3 days. 20,000 frames is about average as well. |
