Console/service client in windows
Hi all,
dumb question here. I've gotten over the novelty of the pretty colors in the GUI version, especially when they cause artifacts all over my screen (ugh) so am switching to the console version of FaH. I've seen mention of running FaH as a "service." How does one do this, and what does it accomplish? Does it let the console version start automatically when windows boots? I assume it means that the whole thing is running in the background; no command window needs to be open, right? Thanks, and sorry for the basicness....the help page on Stanford's website wasn't all that helpful ![]() *EDIT* WOW, I'm sorry. The -config option did it all. I promise I'll go to sleep now

Lefty, assume from your edit that you've now got the service up and running
Something you might not be aware of; you can monitor the progress of your WU with a piece of software called Electron Microscope (EMIII). Panama Red brought it to my attention a while ago; you can use to monitor multiple folding boxes, if you have them. http://home.comcast.net/~wxdude1/emsite/download.html FK

Oh, thanks. That gives me a bit more info if I get curious. (Yes, I got the service up and running, and have now downloaded Electron Microscope).

A related question: I've put FaH as a service on my mom's computer, which she has under a cabinet....it's an old HP pavilion desktop, with a P3 processor at about 1GHz. I'm not sure what it's cooling situation is....can I trust the CPU to throttle back if it gets too hot?

It shouldn't get too hot as P3's do not produce as much heat as P4's. |

Consider installing something like Speedfan to monitor the CPU temperature under load.

I put speed fan on the computer, but it doesn't detect any temperature sensors. It's a proprietary HP motherboard of some kind. Any other temperature monitors you can recommend? Or does this mean there's no temp sensor to monitor?

If Speedfan doesn't work, you may be out of luck. I personally use Everest Home edition - which is a full system advisor, but reads temperatures too. You might try that - it's discontinued now but you can still get hold of it.

You could always run the HP for a while, restart it and quickly check the temps in the bios. As long as the heatsink and fan are clean, I doubt you'd have any problems. You could always add a single case fan at the rear as an exhaust if it doesn't already have one. That'll help keep it cool too.
