100% Cpu

FAHCOR_78.exe usually 50%

WINFAH.exe usually 50%

Task Manager shows both cpus are running 100%.

It's summer time and it gets steamy without the air conditioner on. I'm running folding 24/7.

The chart says each cpu is at 100% . This can't be good for the hardware. Any ideas?

Mike

If you don't want 100% cpu utilization, don't run folding; it's designed to take up all unused cycles.

As far as whether it's good for the hardware, get a temperature monitoring program (CoreTemp is good) and see what the cpu temp is like. Processors catch on fire around 85 degrees C....my A64 4000+ is running 100% (folding) at 55 degrees. Generally, anything below 60 degrees is 'comfortable.'

I believe the AMD chips will slow down automatically before hitting 85 degrees, but I may be wrong. I know intel does.

As long as your temps are good, you should be fine. If you're uncomfortable with it, I believe there's an option in the F@H config that allows you to set the percent utilization of the processor. Back it down if you like. I'm of the opinion that you could run a processor 24/7 well beyond its useful life, as long as you keep the dust bunnies from clogging up your air flow!

CPU's will handle a LOT more than 85'C before catching on fire. I forgot to plug in a CPU fan once and ran the Celeron at 95'C+ for more than a week before I realized and plugged in the fan.

Intel CPU's clock down to cool off, AMD does not. AMD CPU's must have a COP enabled board (I believe that all are now) and will shut down when reaching a critical temp to avoid thermal runaway and CPU damage.

Thanks for everyone's help. I downloaded Coretemp. It said I am running at about 43C and 38C.

Another sky is falling panic episode.

Thanks again,

Mike
