A tale of woe on the new Windows SMP client

As anyone that is running SMP clients, they expired Oct. 1 and have to download a new version.
Well, did the dowload on Sept. 30 since I was going to be out of town during the week. It installed OK but couldn't connect to the assignment server. Thought maybe the server was down so just let the PC run hoping it would connect. But,Nooooooo. Tried to reinstall it several times and tried some other stuff that made things worse.

So, today decided to go to a restore point for XP and try once more to do a new install. Installed OK but still wouldn't connected to assignment server. What the dog dart is wrong!?

Did some thinking and decided to look around in MSCONFIG at Services and Startup items to see if any of the items that where disabled need to be enabled(to note that the previous SMP client worked with these settings). Reenabled all the services(disabled a few like file sharing) and startup items, rebooted. Started FAH and bam, got a new core and am back folding my Quad core after a week of trying to get the SMP to work.

So, there might be some change in the new client that required some service running to connect to Stanford. Not going to monkey around with disabling services since I'm up and running.

Hope this tale may help anyone setting up the new SMP client for Windows.

i had a similar problem when i updated my SMP client. after the update i could not connect to the servers. i tried a few things but in the end i just waited a day or so and it connected on its own, BUT after i connected and downloaded a WU i was getting an error which would cause the work to be deleted and a new one downloaded. i found out that the error was a permissions error. i ended up having to run the install.bat file to get it working again. after all that it seems to be running fine.
