Folding@Home Question

Hi All,

joined up with Folding@Home, pc mech team and got soe questions/issues with it.

yesterday I had it running and the display said 30 secs a frame and i had a project of 1500 frames, and it went through and i went to bed with it at 80/1500, but with 150/1500 estimated.

then this morning it was still goign but I had to close it to run a game that doesnt much like it taking up CPU too much.

So then an hour later I reload it expecting to continue where it left off with the work unit, and now i have a new work unit of 5000 and its still on 0/5000 but estimated 112/5000 and says im now doing 2m:7s a frame.

so what happened to the part work unit i did? waste of CPU time? how come this new one is goign so much slower and so much bigger? seems to take a few days just to do one work unit and if it scraps it and does a new one every time i reload it then ill never complete my first work unit.

it seems a lot worse interface than SETI@home which i did for a few years and to be honest if its going to be this problematic then I will just switch back to SETI, afterall aliens may have cure for cancer! lol

anyone experienced in the PC Mech folding team that can explain this to me and tell me i didnt waste 10 hours of my CPU time?

If you are running a SMP core, they are Beta units and as such some of them are a bit quirky when shut down. Also, SMPs have a very short time on them, about 4 days. Could check the FAHlog.txt file to see if you may have gotten credit for the work done.

from the way you talk it sounds like your running the graphical client, correct? if so that could be part of the problem right there. the graphical client isnt so great to be honest, it causes a lot of problems with games that run OpenGL among other problems. i would reccomend switching to the text-only client. its a little different to setup but it works much much better.

as far as the time for each unit, it depends on the system and the unit, some units will finish in hours, some in days. it just depends on what you got, what computer is and how long you allow it to fold.
