What kind of heating do you have? - If it is via air ducts (natural gas - oil burner etc) - vs water radiators - it will be much easier (cheaper) to install since they can use the same ductwork.

How old is your furnace? My heating and air conditioning units in the same mechanical unit down in the cellar with an outside heat exchanger - 5 year old. . Where I am heading with this is you may want to replace the furnace too with a more efficent modern one... I went to PGE...they do not offer refunds on AC anymore but do have some info on what to look for ...http://www.pge.com/myhome/saveenergy...ir/index.shtml - .

I'm going to get quotes on a package with a new furnace; the one we have is original to the house, {30+ yrs. } we have natural gas W/forced air, so I'm hoping to salvage most of the ductwork. I'd like to be able to run a larger line to the master bedroom as well as to the spare room where I have all the P/c's running. It would'nt be too tough to cut out a larger hole in the ceiling sheetrock. It would be nice to have more CFM to those rooms.

30+ years...sounds like my folks down in El Cerrito (94530) but they get the breeze coming off the bay most of the time so no need for AC.

I see you have anothere thread going... I have a Trane HVAC so I did not reply to that one.

My only thoughts are try to get the outside heat exchanger on the north side of home or in a shaded area - neighbors here with idfentical units but in the sun seem to run a lot mnore than mine which is on north side and only gets sun very early/late in the day.

going to place the exterior unit on the west side of the house; it only gets a couple hours of sun
late in the afternoon.

Late in the afternoon is when it needs all the power it can get.

True; but then I did'nt have a whole lot of viable alternatives. I intend to monitor operation

I might sink a couple 4X4 posts and put up 4'X8' sheet of Redwood Lattice on the South
side of the unit for shade.

Good idea - shield the west and south sides, leave the north side open.
