Gpu2 + Smp

Hey all,

Now that I've got my new rig up running I need to get F@H going. I've installed the GPU2 System Tray Client and it is working decently. It's only getting 480pt WUs which is disappointing, but it will probably do about 6 six of them a day which is OK.

I had SMP running for a while, but it was confusing me. It appeared to be using the other three cores all the time, but it was not using 100% of any of them. Is this the way it works with GPU2 or am I missing something? Also, is it possible to have 2x SMP running with the GPU2 or will that cause problems?

Is there a decent guide for setting both of these up on the same machine? I looked a little bit, but I did find a really good one.

Thanks!

Well now I'm having all sorts of trouble. The GPU client was running fine, but then it got a lot of error messages and kept going through a loop of downloading new projects and sending them back right away. The SMP client as gave me errors about not being able to write local files.

I'm now going through and uninstalling anything that has to do with F@H and I will try to start over.

If anybody has any advice, please let me know.

I had that not being able to write local files earlier today. I went to check what was going on, and apparently one of the smp clients was stuck. Took about a full 24 hours to get out of it. The other one, I just terminated, and then restarted the computer. Then it froze, and I had to terminate the process, and start it again. Looked like it was good after that.

(Using Linux smp)

I had my F@H stuff installed in the Program Files folder and I read that my be a problem because of permissions. This might only be an issue on Vista though. I've moved my F@H folder to My Documents and so far it is working. I have the console GPU client installed now and it is good so far. I am going to let it run a while before I install SMP, just to make sure it is stable.

Is it better to use MPICH or Deino? It seems like MPICH is easier to setup, but I've read Deino offers better performance.

Not really sure. I don't know which one I'm using.

I know I gave my clients their own folder under C:/ (using windows).

Well that GPU client failed. 8 points for 20 works units. I think I will try the SysTray client and see if it can do better.

I reinstalled the SysTray client and it is really kickin' now. It's done 4WUs in 8hrs and that was with a few restarts.

Well I would say this offered a nice boost in PPD. From 1000 to 4500 and it might still increase a bit. I'm really considering installing a 8800GT on my other machine. That thing is a beast if it is allowed to just sit and crank out WUs.

You might want to look at getting a 9600GSO, it's supposed to get around 4500PPD for each card and costs $50 after MIR for an evga card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130356.

Hmm....that looks inviting. Pretty soon I'm going to run out of money for all this. It might be worth it though for that extra PPD.

Legit forums has an a code for a newegg coupon which will bring down the price of the card to $36. I think it is now possible to make a folding machine which will net you over 15,000 PPD for under $1000, I think that would be a very interesting. I live in Canada unfortunately (unfortunately in the sense that I can't access newegg, I'm happy living in Canada otherwise), so I can't try this myself. I'd like to get a HD4650 at some point though so I can get better folding performance on my machine (I'm still waiting on my hard drive cage to arrive).

Yeah, 15,000 PPD is a lot for one machine. Unfortunately, the $1000 price tag is a bit of a buzz kill.

I just realized that my secondary machine probably won't handle a higher-end graphics card without a PSU upgrade, so that's even more money.

Does anyone know how to fix a MISSING_WORK_FILES error? I keep getting this randomly when I download a new WU. I've tried restarting multiple times and bumping up the DRAM voltage. Any ideas?

Might want to delete the work folder, and try to set up the client all over again.

Tried that, no luck. It will download the 82 core which is the non-SMP core and then I get the same error after it finishes 1 or 2 WUs. I tried the MPICH and the Deino and I've had no luck with either.

I have no idea then.

I think some of my clients aren't really working. I'm not seeing the same points I was about a week ago.

I was having lots of problems with not being able to get an A1 core. I kept getting the stinkin' 82 core which is worthless. I stopped the SMP folding for a while because of that and my room was getting way too hot. Once the weather cools off and I can figure out how to get an A1 core, I will start folding GPU+SMP again.

Does anybody know what happened to dschief? He was racking up some major points and then it all stopped in about 4 days.

Are you still getting A1 cores on your SMP clients? For the life of me, I could not get one to download.

Looks like I have one on this computer.

I'm too lazy to walk downstairs right now to check the others.
