confusion

hi
i am trying to develop a distibuted computing model
for scentific/engineering problem. I wanted to
implement using Java rmi. but it doesn't seem to meet
our requirements.
they are
1. should be able to distribute over the internet.
2. would like to run the client as an applet and this
is giving a lot of problem in java rmi.
another question is how is SETI@home implemented. i
mean in which langauge etc. any ideas?
Whcih is the best way to appraoch my problem.?
Any help will be appreciated.
