Seti@home invite

If you're not running any type of distributed computing program, and feel like helping out, join the Alf Hunters of PC Mech in our small quest to find intelligent life in outer space!

All you have to do is install the Seti@home software located at http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ . Then visit our team page (the link's above) and join. There's not much to it. After installing the program, your computer can be set up to scan and analyze radio telescope data when you're not using your computer. In other words, when your screen saver comes on, your computer is actually doing someting instead of just burning electricity.

We'd love to have you if you're interested!

You never know... We've never found a cure for cancer, but that doesn't mean we should stop trying. I sure don't believe we are "alone."

Tiretool, how does it affect the Host in a small home network? Will it slow down other users? A little? A lot?

Doesn't it recieve the raw data, process it, then send it back like F@H?

[edit]: hmm... I wonder how it would go if I had both SETI and F@H running

Seti is designed to be run as a screen saver but it can be set to run all the time. It will run the CPU to 100%.

Force, yes. Work units are around 350k in size.

GLC, I'm also wondering what would happen if you ran both, because F@H already takes the CPU to 100%, so would SETI and F@H split the CPU?

I'm not sure what would happen - Seti has no client settings for CPU usage. All you can do is set the process priority in Windows task manager - it defaults to Low and I think this will essentially shut it off if you also have F&H running.

for a few weeks i ran both S@H and F@H. just set F@H to core priority to slightly higher and it will run both. i guess it runs them at 50% each. but since i got a new computer i have F@H on one and S@H on the other.

here is an idea for people with older AMD K6-2 machines. i had one and it took weeks to get even 1% done with F@H to me it wasn't even worth leaving it on! i put Seti on it one day just to see if would work better and it did!
Seti ran 110% better than F@H on that AMD K6-2 500, if you have one, give it a try!

How do I join the PC Mech team? I downloaded the software and set it up last night. Then I went to then "Alf hunters of PC Mech" page. I clicked join and it asks for my SETI email and password. I entered the email that I registered SETI with, but I never entered a password. I even tried entering my email and having it send me a password, but it never did.

What do I use for a password?

Did you register with a valid email address, and have you checked your spam filter? They send you the initial password, and then you can change it.

Right-o. It was in my junk folder. I never even check that since I have my hotmail account setup through Outlook. Thanks, G.

You won't show up till your first work unit has been completed and submitted and the server refreshes - which I think is once a day.

Has SETI ever found anything that might possibly be intelligent life?

Looks like most members fell off the planet with the switchover to BOINC, they haven't transferred their credits. I'm guilty of this, I don't want to run BOINC, so I guess I'm out.

I had the problem that the email address I use for seti is no longer active and so to switch to BOINC I would have to make a new username and I want to keep my stats so I never switched.... seti username is dbowman.

I like the idea of it where you can run a bunch of DC projects at the same time, but I don't think they should have gone to a BOINC port only. I think you should still be able to run their original port. Also the way you must register I don't like, instead of a username, like enhanced08, you get some big 30ish charactor number, its much easier to use a name to login rather than copy and paste this number.

just my 2 cents.

Alright cool, thanks for the link I just joined up .

As for BOINC, the key is for security reasons but you can login in with an email address/password. Also, why should we run outdated classic longer? The BOINC client allows so much more out of the box (wu caching, stats, etc) granted it's not perfect but it's an improvement. IMHO I don't think Seti has the resources needed to keep both classic & BOINC going on at the same time day in & day out. Otherwise it would be nice to see Classic still running.
My 2cents.
