it a distrubuted computing for medical reserch how it works is the folding program runs in the background on your computer and it analizes work units that it down loads from the internet then sends the results back and gets some moor if thay had to use thair own computers it wood cost milions and take over 100 years by farming the work out to thousands of computers around the world the cost is tiny and the time is just a cupple of years to compleate and the cost to us that run the program is about £1 every year in internet download time if you use a dile up conection it only uses the computer when you arnt doing anyting that neads the cpu so if you looking at the internet or reading emails or wrighting letters it works in the back ground if you play a game or watch a dvd then it stops working till the processer is free

Will the folding take place the entire time a computer is on? But the info is uploaded to Stanford only when you establish an internet connection? I have two comps that are on 24/7, but I have dial-up, so how will that work?

You can set it so they will connect to the net themselves to upload the data, or wait until you connect to the net.

id like take part in this too, i have a little question though, does this process take up much bandwith? i have a cable connection with 10gb monthly download limit.

is it possible to take part on pc's that do not have an internet connection themselves? My ISP doesnt allow more than one pc on the connection (or you have to pay extra per pc) and it takes an hour each time when i hook up a new pc to allow the NIC's mac-adress.

if it were possible, i have 4 pc's of my own (200mhz to 2000 mhz) that do nothing most of the time. but like i said, only my dad's pc has the internet connection, and i dont know if he would like this on his pc (he's a doctor, so maybe ...)

OK, I'm up and running. I'll be downloading this on my other comp as well. It says working, but I'm still on 0/400... Slow moving protein, I guess?

Depending on which protein you get and how fast your computer is, it can take up to a week to complete 1 protein.

I'm at 16% after about ten hrs. At that rate mebbe my 400 finishes in 2.5 days... We'll see.

Out of curiosity, do the graphics in the display window have anything at all to do with the actual processing of the protein, or are they just extraneous 'window dressing'? It seems like it just flashes random molecules there...

Hey guys,

Guess what. I'm in too!!! I had the program still installed on my HDD cause I stopped folding I few months back for another (Dutch) team, named Dutch Power Cows. It wasn't much fun over there (allthough they are 25th on the ranking).
I went back to my favorite Distibuted Computing project, SETI. But I'm wondering if SETI will ever have any succes, chances are small I think. Partly because they only scan a part of the universe. Next to that the signal from an alien we are waiting for could reach earth tommorow or in 20 years. I think I think I can use my CPU for better use in the form of the Folding project.
So my message to every one is, stop crunching (ET's signal) and come on folding.

I stayed with SETI for a long time cause I really like the concept of Distributed Computing. What I liked about the SETI project was the way they handled with users, the client, the ranking system. I think the overall setup of the SETI project is very good. The goal they are trying to reach is a bit to difficult to reach I think.

I think certain people here know about the BOINC project. I really hope the plans for this project will succeed. If marketing of this project is handled in a good way I think the BOINC porject could be a great succes with lots of users.

I hope my name will be on the PCMECH team stats page in a few days.

How do you know they do that? I can't find any disclaimer that says they have it built into the toolbar. I'm not saying your wrong, but it definitely seems wrong for them to do that without stating it in the software agreement.

I'm finishing my last SETI WU now. And from that moment on Folding@Home will start up automatically each time my PC starts up.
