Well I finally got this program running on Monday but I still haven't finished a unit. How long does it usually take?

Every WU (Work Unit) takes a different amount a time...it also depends on the speed of your processor. I have had some that finish in under 12 hours and some that take 3 days. (This is running at 2.9ghz). Once you do a couple, you'll get an idea of how long it usually takes.

My name isn't showing up in the team listings, does it only show up after I complete 1 WU?

I joined to see if I can help. Installed it on my 2.4g test machine that is using only 2% cpu cycles at idle.
What is VN1? When I click to see team statistics I get some ad music website. It appears to be working on a project though but I can't seem to find that stats. Carl |

It takes me 11 minutes to get through a frame, 9.15 hours to get a 50 frame WU done. my computer is useing a celeron 1.3ghz processor. What are other peoples times? Whats the largest amount of frames for one of these proteins?
Also, I've finished 1 WU already and I'm on my second one. I thought the protein changed every time you finished a WU, but I'm on the same one as before. Am I wrong or is the program messed up? |

My first system is doing the 400 proteins in @ 2 days time. They seem to be the ones that take longest. A 50, 125, or 250 can be finished in less than a day usually. My slower system takes up to 8 days to finish a 400, and 1-3 for the others. I've had a 500 once, but it went as quickly as a 50...
I think the prog assigns proteins randomly, so who knows what you may get next. Here's the link to team stats page. Seems to be up and working: http://folding.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/teampage?q=13761 HTH

I just started useing Zone Alarm today. Is there anything I need to do to allow the folding at home program to send and receive the protein files?

Pardon me for my ignorance, but why would a university or research organization need the computing power of several thousand personal PC's? Wouldn't one mainframe be faster and more efficient? It does not seem to make sense to spread data over thousands of connections and expect an accurate and cohesive result when much faster and more complex calculations could be performed on the mainframe.

Why not just use a supercomputer?
Modern supercomputers are essentially clusters of hundreds of processors linked by fast networking. The speed of these processors is comparable to (and often slower than) those found in PCs! Thus, if an algorithm (like ours) does not need the fast networking, it will run just as fast on a supercluster as a supercomputer. However, our application needs not the hundreds of processors found in modern supercomputers, but hundreds of thousands of processors. Hence, the calculations performed on Folding@Home would not be possible by any other means! Moreover, even if we were given exclusive access to all of the supercomputers in the world, we would still have fewer cycles than we do with the Folding@Home cluster! This is possible since PC processors are now very fast and there are hundreds of millions of PCs sitting idle in the world. |
