On my 98 box (currently down) I use EMIII to start, and hide it automatically on boot, and put EMIII into stealth mode so nobody ends it.

I was running a folding program for cancer research in the UK, but I had a few problems with it and shut it down. Saturday (6 Nov) I set up F@H on one of my networked machines running windows ME, everything is fine and it is currently on 13%. It's not a great machine but I run it as an email server for my web site so it's on 24/7, as soon as I get chance I will set the other two machines up (XP pro) and let them run with it.

Andy.. I am a bit of a noob at this and maybe these questions could be found in the FAQ's but I am a little short of time.
Came home from a job yesterday afternoon to a power failure (nothing new ..regular occurance here) all my machines are set to stay off after a power failure. When the power comes back here it tends to flash a few times before getting going so it blows your machine up. OK I had to restart the folding and it has gone back to 0%. Have I just wasted the 25 / 26% it had done? is there any way to return to the task that the machine was doing? It's a few years now since I last did this and I am wondering if this is why I stopped doing the cancer research folding in the UK. |

At what intervals did you set it to save its progress?

Mr .. like I said bit of a noob at this sorry I haven't where do I do that?
I am looking on the other machine and in the advanced window it says "Checkpointing frequency" and the slider is about half way between the 3 minute mark and the 30 minute mark. Last edited by rjfvillarosa; 11-10-2004 at 08:55 AM. |

That is where it is left by default and that should fine.
Right click on the F@H icon in the taskbar, and go to my folding. This will bring up a page with a few links on it. Click on unitinfo.txt. It should tell you when the unit was downloaded, when it is due, and what percentage is done. If the downloaded date is the same as the day you restarted your computer after you lost power, then you might have lost the previous unit. |

OK i just checked on what you said and it says download time 6 Nov 21.09 which is correct for Saturday when I started it, but it only says 2%.
I hope this blessed power outage thing here (which is very common) is not going to be a problem. |

Maybe the workunit got corrupted somehow in the shutdown? I have regular power outages and have never had a problem with f@h on two machines (although file corruption does happen).

Adding this so I can find it next time I need it...
This is the link to the Folding@Home server status page. It's updated every 10 minutes with information on all of Stanford's assignment and collection servers. If you're getting an error that your client is unable to send results or cannot fetch new work, you will see a server IP listed in that error. Check this page to see if the problem is that your server is temporarily down. This can be the case quite often, as the servers are shut down for maintenance or other reasons. |

I Just Joined
I just downloaded the console version and am running. The machine is a older Celeron 1.6GHz that I use as a file and print server. It's on all the time and should be useful. No problems so far.
I do have a question. I have a P4 3.0 with Hyperthreading. If this goes well, I might want to put it to work as well.. I'm running XP Home Edition. Do I have to have XP Pro to utliize the Hyperthreading or not.

The directions for configuring two clients on an HT machine are in the first page of this thread. Click on the link to the Tips and Tricks article, and just follow the steps. Thanks!

Thanks Guys!!
These projects they send look to be pretty long, especially with a slower machine like that Celeron. Been running about 16 hours and finished 32,500 out of 250,000. I suppose that's probably normal. I'm going to see if I can solicit more folks to join in!!! Worthy cause!! Thanks |

Depending on the project, times can range from several hours to several days. Thanks for your interest in the project!

I've just started folding, using the console version on a different machine (not the sig PC). Will finish the first project in about 3 1/2 to 4 hours after about 5 dyas of 24/7. I have looked over all the documentation I can find and have this question still. If a need arises requiring a shutdown or restart, what is the best way to stop the console to assure limited project steps are lost when the console auto starts?
Hope that makes sense. I have at least 2 other PC's to run this on. |

Depends on your OS. In XP, it automatically shuts down your Console version for you. In 98, you have to manually close the box with Ctrl-C, I believe.
I think the program saves work between steps every 30 minutes, or something like that, by default. If you want to change that, you have to go to the Target line of the program, space once at the end, and add the " -config " tag (w/o the quotes). Next time you run FAH, it will let you set up your options again. One of them is how many minutes between checkpoints, so you can shorten it to what you'd like. |

Hey guys,
I just started running F@H as a service on XP Pro. How do I check progress of my w/u when running as a service. Before I would just right click on the System Tray icon and go from there. Thanks! Stryker

Stryker,
I was going to try the to go the process route as well. That was one of my questions. It would be better to not have the command prompt windows active. |

I have four CPU's running and am attempting a fifth. It is an old Compaq Armada Laptop, Pent II 333 MHz, 192 MB memory and running Win ME. I installed the Win 9x/ME console client and seemingly that went well. It started simulation with a project 724 run and issued the first "Completed 0 out of 125000 steps".
That was almost 24 hours ago and nothing has changed. Without a Task Manager like Win XP, I can't really tell about CPU activity, there is occasional HDD activity.Any suggestions will be great. I was going to let this old thing do something productive!!! Thanks for the help!!! |

It should be faster than that. Try restarting the client, it could have stalled or frozen.

I was about to do just that and did. It restarted OK. Indicated a completion of 125 out of 125000 steps. Maybe it froze along the way because if it took 21 hours to do that, then it's pretty hopeless for this OLD Thing!!!
I'll post more later. Thanks! |

make sure you have the battery setting the way you want. you can set it so that it only runs when its not using the battery to save power. you can download small programs to tell you the cpu usage among other things. google it.
