It's running on A/C only. All the Power management is set to "never". I'll bet I've checked that a dozen times.
GOOD Idea about the Google. Going there next!!! Thanks!!

On a slower computer like that, it's also a good idea to configure it to receive 'timeless WUs.'

I have it running at 100% CPU now for about 13 hrs. Got a little CPU monitor as suggested. The project is not due until sometime in April. However, it is LONG, measuring in frames it's 400 long. It will finish in 14 says. That's OK.
I have heard that you can request "timeless WUs". I have also heard that you can request smaller units. I have reviewed the Console Client config options and don't see anything specific about either subject. Thanks for the help!! |

I'll second that welcome. I haven't been here long, but it's enjoyable and rewarding. I have taken a consulting job and will not be using my main PC as much during the day. That means more folding!!!

I've just started folding this evening and it is going fine. It says 0/7500 frames completed after about 20 mins and it says that it won't finish the 7500 until October! Is this normal? I don't leave my computer on 24hrs a day, should I get a deadlineless core?
Also, I know the admin at my school and they have about 80 Celeron 2.0GHzs there so i'm going to try to get them to start using F@H Last edited by allburnintegrated; 05-07-2005 at 04:53 AM. Reason: inaccurate information |

thats great to hear!! welcome to the team!
it depends on how long you let your computer run each day. if you only run it for a few hours while your on it then yes you should switch to timeless WUs. you have an amd 3000+ so it should spit out WUs pretty fast. if you can get your school to fold that would be awesome for the team! plus it would give me some good competition lol. hope it all goes well for ya and thanks for joining the team!

I've got a question that's been nagging in my brain every since I started using linux on my other computer. I realized that it's console based . I just got to thinking and wondered if there was anyway at all to make a shortcut or something. I'm just curious is all. It's probly a dumb question but once something like this gets in my brain it's gonna bug me until I ask.

crash, are you asking if a shortcut for FAH can be made while in the Linux OS? I'm completely unfamiliar with Linux. You might try asking in the Alternative Operating Systems Forum or at the Folding@Home Forums.

Thought this would be a good link to include here. There's a new Wiki dedicated to Folding@Home. Cool concept. It's only a few months old, but already there's alot of good content. Check it out!

As for the avatar, you'll need 1024 posts to get a custom one. |

Glad to have you, tho. Stick around, as you'll find this site an excellent resource. Won't be long til you need that avatar. Noticed your edit above - signatures will show only your first post of each thread. If you have any Folding@Home questions or difficulties, don't hesitate to start a new thread here in the Distributed Computing forum.

Sorry for not responding folks... I was in Montrιal for the weekend.
Hey darkmaninc, first of all thanks for joining the team! Great to have you helping out. As stated already, the custom avatar is only available after 1024 posts, but if you like I can make a signature image for you (like the AMD version you're using now) with an icon of your choice. If you want me to do one up for you, just send me a PM or an e-mail (same address as the photo gallery) with an image attached or a link to an image you want me to use. A word of advice though... the less detail the image has the better it will turn out in the sig image. Logos, cartoon characters, etc... usually turn out pretty good, but obviously if you send me a photograph or something it won't look too great once resized to about 30px x 30px. ![]() Any questions, give me a shout. Thanks again, Stryker

FAH performance boost
When running folding as a service and you want to stop the service for whatever reason you normally would goto task manager or the services management.
An easier way to do this is to create 2 bat files, one to start the service and one to stop it. To do this make a bat file by going to notepad and saving as file_name.bat. start.bat net start "FAH@C:+Program Files+F@H+FAH502-Console.exe" stop.bat net stop "FAH@C:+Program Files+F@H+FAH502-Console.exe" Make sure the path to the fah console is correct in your bat files or else it will not work. Check the console name as well. Once saved simply create a shortcut or place the bat file on the desktop for easy access. Double click start to start the service and stop to stop it. EDIT: Since I added some info here I decided to do a bit more. With new WUs such as QMDs and new CPUs and all, folding can be optimized so to say. QMDs are a new breed of WU which give a high ppd on P4 machines. Some newer P4's can get 4-600ppd with a single machine!! To get these QMDs you need 512mb or more RAM and a P4. Anything less than 512mb and you get no QMDs and anything other P4 (P3, AMD, etc) will not get a QMD unless Linux is your OS and in that case you will not get the performance a P4 will. To get QMDs you need to set your config file to allow WUs of 5mb (BigWU) and run time-less WUs with the -advmethods flag. HT on P4's has had its problems at Stanford. They say that if you wantmore points use HT and have one client per "cpu". If you want to help science more and not worry about points as much then only use 1 client on an HT machine. Me personally I don't understand how running 2 clients and fully using the cpu with HT slows the work down so I run 2 clients. A word of caution if you have HT and run QMDs... DONT! QMDs use a lot ofmemory bandwidth and if you have 2 clients running QMDs then they will both slow way down due to using all the memory bandwidth. Also they can use up to 400mb per WU and can use all your RAM if you only have 512mb. This is what called OC-AMD to stop folding for awhile. If you wish to run 2 clients then set one for QMD and the other for tinkers or something thats less demanding on the memory. For other machines, other than P4s, use these flags -forceasm and -advmethods. If you have the memory and internet use them with 5mb WU. Hope that helps, I know those of you with P4s, 512mb+, and high speed inet will get a nice bump in ppd. Happy Folding! ![]() *** maybe a mod can add this to the first page so its easier to find *** Last edited by enhanced08; 10-25-2005 at 01:39 AM. |
