I'm assuming this is a no-brainer for always-on broadband people. Things I'm sure just send and receive automatically.
How 'bout dial-up users tho? I have to shut down the client, open a connection, and then restart the client to get it to send and receive right away. If I leave the client on, connect, and then walk away, eventually it will grab another work packet but often won't send the results. How do you go about doing this?

I have broadband so yeah it does it's own thing, but I have had to use the dialup a few times. I just shut down the client then connect and restart the client. I had four puters to do so I couldn't wait for the client to do it's thing then go to the next.

My 98 box asks to connect when it's done (neither XP machine does this). I guess I could allow 98 to dial out without waiting for me to OK it. Makes me nervous tho. If I allow that, then anything that attempts to dial out will do so, won't it? And will the connection close when result is sent? Dunno...

I don't know if you have used Electron Microscope or not, but it does have some extra tweaks and setting such as "Close Internet Connection when download finishes". I have not tried this so I don't know how well it works, but it might be worth a look.
I have attached a screen shot of the options. |

I have not looked very closely at EM. Looks like a pretty neat tool. Have you (or has anyone else) used it for other purposes either?
I wonder if it has options to dial out automatically, tho. It'd be cool if I had less hands-on work to do to send results. Darn you, broadband users... |

I use EM for monitoring my 9 clients on 6 different systems, but I haven't played around with all of it's features. It does what I want it to do and alerts me if there is a problem with one of the clients.
One other thing is to install a software firewall and only let the F@H client and other known safe programs permission to dial out. I thought the F@H clent can be configured to dial out without permission or am I wrong on this? |

There's a spot that says 'Ask before connecting to the network,' but I left that unchecked so it would just go ahead and send/receive. If I'm already online, it does that. Dunno about getting it to dial out tho...

It also asks if F@H should use IE settings and that should allow it to connect.

Alright, I've been using Electron Microscope for about 3 weeks now, and here's what I've found.
Dial-up users should have this for sending results, even though it's only about 50/50 when it successfully sends. Sometimes it redials and connects on later attempts. Sometimes it will successfully send that queued set of results along with the new set that gets completed later. There are other times when you still have to manually send by shutting down and restarting the client. The real reason for having it is that it has yet to fail in dialing up to grab a new work packet so your folding doesn't get put on hold. EMIII then shuts your dial-up connection down, keeping the phone line tied up for a minimal amount. On top of that, it's a neat way of keeping track of your folds, whether one or many. If you haven't tried it yet, check it out. You can find the link in the Info thread. |
