End of Genome@Home Project

This is a quote from the FAH News Page: March 8, 2004 It is with the deepest gratitude that we wish to thank all those who have contributed over the years to the Genome@home project. It has accumulated a large database of protein sequences, which will be used for important scientific purposes for many years by our group and many others throughout the world. Like all good things, however, its time has come. Over the last year we have kept Genome@home running on a very low budget by sharing much of its client infrastructure with Folding@home, but several months from now its funding will no longer be available at all. For this reason, the Genome@home project will be terminated. While the servers will stop distributing new work units on March 10, they will remain up until April 15 to receive the final results. Our sister project Folding@home remains on very solid financial ground. While it requires a more frequent connection to the Internet and it has a somewhat different scoring system for those who enjoy the competition, we would highly recommend it. Your continued donation of computer time to Stanford University in the Folding@home project will always be, as it has been with Genome@home, truly appreciated. This affects some of our folders with slower computers, as they were able to select G@H projects which folded in a shorter amount of time. Hopefully nobody will be unable to contribute after the end of G@H availability.

WOW, well if the benchmarking of F@H worked like it's supposed to, the slower boxes should get the smaller WU's

Can your computers not finish within the time limit, or will they just not attempt to fold a full protein?

well mine right now has no modem and its only a 466mhz cpu. i have an 800mhz duron that can probably get one done but i don't have a modem for it either. what i did with G@H was i downloaded 10 WU into my queue and then i could go a few weeks before it would be done and then i wouldn't have to switch modems as often.

Yikes. Now that's dedication. Can't you pick up a cheap win-modem to stick in that 800? I may even have an extra on laying around...

well i'm back in the woods a good ways and win-modems don't work too much line noise or something. my dad was talking about getting DSL awhile back and i don't wanna spend money on a modem if i don't need it ya know?
