Core 79 issue

This looks like Stanford is trying to remove the slight edge the HT P4's have and it don't sit well with me. Looks like a lot of wasted cpu cycles to me.

This might be veering off-topic but Vijay dropped a hint a couple of weeks ago that a change was, or might be, forthcoming that would remove any advantage of running multiple instances of FAH on an HT-enabled processor. Of course, I have NO IDEA what he was hinting at, whether it had to do with points bonuses for work being returned quickly or what.

I don't see what the purpose of limiting HT processors would be for Stanford. If they want the most data for their research, that would be a backwards thing to do. If they're worrying about point totals, that worries me...

What do you think about running a third instance like they talked about in that thread? Seems like alot of hassle for the speed improvement to run it only when your other clients get those Double Gs.

I don't know what the true purpose is or if it's just a temporary thing, but I have seen a slow down when I get hit with the double groms. That's when I started checking to see what the problem was and once I see my boxes weren't pumping 100% I went looking for answers. It does seem like too much trouble for a possible 18% gain because you would have to manually set the affinity once it started a new WU and for me that is 4 HT PC's. I just hope this is not a way to slow down the HT P4's cause it just don't make sense.

lil jimmie,

Agree, it does not make sense. I have completed 8 WUs' for 100 points.
Since this is for research to help people and they wanted us to help; I don't understand why they would want to handicap us.
I'm getting ready to get out if improvements aren't forthcoming.

even tho i'm not an intel guy and don't have any HT'ing P4's i think its stupid to limit the capabilities of the processor. its designed to work as 2 cpus, thats why it was bought!

it doesn't make since to basically cut the power in half.

is there anything we can do? like someone send them an email asking why or to change their mionds??

Well, I'm gonna try running 3 instances on two of my boxes and see how it goes, so far it has picked up on the cpu usage, it will take some time playing with the affinity settings to see what works best. Hopefully the Pande group will address this issue soon

Kubie, don't give up hope yet. Surely they'll get this taken care of soon. Even if not, the work your computers send can still help (Stanford just won't be getting as much info as they could...)

Remember everyone, it's only affecting processing speeds when you're assigned a Core_79 on one of your two clients.
